Just an Hour From Dana Point, Catalina Island Is the Perfect Southern California Day Trip Destination
Head to Catalina Island for a gorgeous day trip that will take you worlds away from it all.
If you’re in the mood for fun day trips in Southern California that will get you out of town and back again in one day, you’ve got to head out to Catalina Island. The small island has so much to offer in a short amount of time. You’ll take a ferry straight out and in just an hour, you’ll be ready to enjoy all the fun that Catalina has in store—and who knows, you may even be tempted to relocate!
Discover the Natural Beauty of Catalina Island
The first thing you’ll notice about Catalina is the striking beauty of the shoreline. With multiple harbors, placid inlets, and natural greenery, you’ll fall in love with the island’s beauty immediately. Avalon is the only incorporated city on Catalina Island, and it’s the only one you’ll need. There is so much to do, you’ll have to be selective to fit in all your favorite things! You’ll have the choice to participate in ocean-focused activities like swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, or snorkeling.
Things to Do in Avalon on a Catalina Island Day Trip
If you’re more inclined to stay on dry land, you can be adventurous there, too. There are opportunities for zip lining, hiking and biking, golfing, and even shopping in the town. One unique way to explore the island is by renting a golf cart and driving around. (There are very few vehicles on the island.) Rentals can typically accommodate between four and six passengers, and feel like a safe and approachable way to zip through the island.
Prefer walking? Catalina has plenty of fun and colorful houses and other buildings to admire on foot. There’s no better place for a scenic neighborhood walk than here. Who knows—you might end up wanting to move right into one of those colorful residences on the beautiful little island and add your own boat to the lovely collection at the marina.
Lastly, if you're looking for a world-class view, take the Garden to Sky Trail. It's a three-mile out-and-back trail that offers stunning views of the island, and the trailhead is just on the outskirts of Avalon.
Best Places to Dine on Catalina Island

When you're ready for a bite to eat, you'll find no shortage of delicious restaurants to choose from. Some local favorites include the Lobster Trap, Avalon Grille, Naughty Fox, and Steve's Steakhouse. Stay for the sunset if you want a real treat. You’ll be amazed by the stunning colors painting the sky. Sit on the beach for the full effect, and make sure you don’t forget your camera for this part!
As you can see, this beautiful island is the ideal day trip for an Orange County local to experience island life. There is something for everyone here, whether you enjoy hiking, shopping, or boating.
