From Hitting the Slopes to Strapping on Skates: How to Enjoy a Perfect Weekend in This Winter Northern California Town
From dawn to dusk you'll be on the go when spending a winter weekend in Truckee, California.
California is so much more than beautiful coasts and bucket-list-worthy cities. It is also home to charming small towns that turn into winter wonderlands … yes, winter wonderlands! In fact, one of the most beautiful winter getaways is found in a Northern California town — Truckee. This small city is approximately 12 miles from the northern shore of Lake Tahoe and is the perfect destination to spend a winter weekend. From skiing to winter hikes to picturesque overlooks to cozy vacation rentals, you’ll fall in love with this chilly time of the year in Truckee, California.
Truckee is a town located in Nevada County and nearly 17,000 individuals call it home. This gorgeous city is known for its proximity to Lake Tahoe and its vast selection of outdoor activities. Truckee has a rich history and is a bit unique as it wasn’t incorporated until 1993.
This town is a traveler’s paradise and there is something for everyone to enjoy here. As you drive into the downtown area (which is located on the National Register of Historic Places), you’ll find historic buildings that now house locally-owned shops and restaurants. Walk around town and look at the murals on the building walls, search for one-of-a-kind items in each store, and even try many of the restaurants where foodies rejoice. If you are a bit of a history buff, make sure you check out the virtual walking tour of historic downtown as well.
And while we could easily spend an entire weekend exploring downtown Truckee during a winter getaway, there’s nothing quite like heading outdoors and exploring the snowy wonderland that surrounds town. The entire area features countless winter activities for all members of the family.
For those who want a more heart-racing adventure, Truckee is a prime location as there are seven major ski resorts less than 45 minutes away from town, providing plenty of options for a day on the slopes. You may also want to explore the area on the back of a snowmobile and several local companies offer guided snowmobile tours from short, sightseeing experiences to full-day adventures.
My perfect winter day includes a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and there are several established trails in Donner Memorial State Park and Tahoe National Forest ideal for this winter gear. An easy, yet beautiful, cross-country skiing trail in Donner Memorial State Park is the Lake Loop Trail, which is 2.5 miles and a perfect option for beginners.
You can also strap on a pair of ice skates at one of the ice rinks in Truckee and the surrounding area. The Truckee Ice Rink, near Downtown Truckee and the Legacy Trail, is one of our favorites. The young and the young at heart will also smile, giggle, and squeal on a sledding or tubing adventure as you’ll find several excellent sledding hills around town and tubing opportunities at many of the local ski resorts.
And when you want to set up a basecamp for all of your winter adventures, there are plenty of vacation rental options in the Truckee area. We are particularly fond of cozy cabins to rent in the winter where you can snuggle up next to the fireplace with a hot beverage in hand and enjoy a cozy night.
Winter shouldn’t be a time you stay cooped up indoors. Get out, explore, and fall in love with the snowy weather when you visit Truckee, California. You'll never forget a perfect weekend in this winter wonderland.
