Mill Valley, California, is located north of San Francisco in Marin County on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. While only 13 miles from the city, it feels like it's worlds away. In Mill Valley, you'll find a peaceful community with a population of 14,105. As one of the slower-paced Northern California towns, it is home to a charming, beautiful downtown with historic buildings, quaint shops, and a small main square where you can spend time people-watching or playing chess.

Exploring Downtown Mill Valley

There are many fantastic shops and restaurants in downtown Mill Valley, and there is always something new to see in Depot Plaza. This plaza in the heart of downtown is home to a rotating public arts display hosted by the City of Mill Valley and the Mill Valley Arts Commission. The downtown area is rustic, charming, and upscale all at once with a mix of specialty home stores and clothing shops, plus a theater and live music venue.

Stop inside the Mill Valley Market to grab some local wine and cheese. This family-owned grocery store with a deli first opened in 1929 and was moved to its current location in 1955. It's a great place to grab a to-go lunch and head to one of Mill Valley's beautiful parks for a picnic.

Another fantastic stop is the local library. Even if you don’t have a library card, you have to check out the absolutely stunning Mill Valley Public Library. This gorgeous library is a book lover's dream. Read a book in a cozy chair next to a two-story window overlooking the towering redwoods, or rest outside on the spacious deck.

If you’ve seen those stunning places, check out the Bothin Marsh Preserve. This tidal wetland area is a six-minute drive from downtown Mill Valley. Take a walk along the trail that runs through the marsh and enjoy birdwatching — this is a rest stop for more than 400 species of migratory birds.
