The Southern California Beach Town Locals Hope Stays off Tourists’ Radar

Avila Beach is a hidden beach town in Southern California where sandy shores, historic piers, and relaxing hot springs create the perfect coastal escape.

If a "hidden beach town in Southern California" sounds too good to be true, this one's for you. While most locals know about Avila Beach, a charming coastal community on the Golden State's south-central coast, it's basically a secret to tourists. Think LA vibes meets small-town energy: high-end hotels, waterfront dining, and gorgeous views without the crowds. If that sounds like your thing, come discover all that Avila Beach has to offer.

With a population of just over 1,500, Avila Beach is an ideal getaway when you're seeking a quiet coastal escape. It's located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles; however, it's slightly closer to LA. The town is located off Highway 1, down a winding road lined with sprawling oak trees (don't worry, there are plenty of palm trees once you're within the city limits).

Avila Beach is frequently cited among the most charming small towns in California, and it doesn't take long to see why. The pace of life is slow, the town square features tons of local shops and restaurants, and the streets are lined with palm trees (like Hollywood Boulevard, minus all the tourists and traffic). As you stroll around and take it all in, you'll feel the warm ocean breeze on your skin, the fresh salt air invigorating your senses.

Best Things to Do in This Hidden Beach Town in Southern California

The beaches here are absolutely gorgeous, whether you plan to swim or sunbathe. You can rent kayaks and paddleboards from Avila Beach Paddlesports for some fun on the water. The 1,685-foot Avila Pier is the only publicly accessible pier in town, and it's a popular spot for fishing and strolling. (Please note: the pier is partially closed for repairs; however, visitors can still walk through a portion of it.)

If deep relaxation is what you're chasing, enjoy a healing soak in the mineral pools at Avila Hot Springs or Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa. Other activities include the Avila Beach Farmers Market (open Fridays, April-September), the Avila Valley Barn for homemade baked goods, and tastings at local wineries, such as Peloton Cellars.

The Point San Luis Lighthouse is also an Avila Beach highlight. Opened in 1890 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this local treasure offers docent-led tours that dive into its rich history as a working lighthouse for nearly 100 years. You can also take a guided hike to the lighthouse on the just under 4-mile Pecho Coast Trail. The trail is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and it passes through private property, so a guide must be present at all times. Hikers must be at least 10 years of age.

If you need recommendations for dining and lodging in this quiet beach town in Southern California, you can't beat the fresh seafood at Mersea's Restaurant. Reimer's Candies & Ice Cream is a must-visit for the nostalgia alone (and nothing beats strolling along the beach with an ice cream cone in hand). For hotels, the Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa is the best option if you're looking for a rejuvenating wellness retreat.
