The Little Town Near Buffalo That Might Just Be The Most Unique Town In The World

Our state is filled with some pretty incredible small towns, many of which fall further away from the city of Buffalo. If you take a closer look at Western New York though, you'll find that one of the most unique towns in the world is actually right here in our neck of the woods.

Head just an hour south of Buffalo and you'll discover the tiny town of Lily Dale tucked away in our state's westernmost corner.

Lily Dale is a gated community that's a bit different from the villages that you may be used to stumbling upon.

It sits along the southern shores of Cassadaga Lake, but it isn't just the natural beauty that makes it one-of-a-kind.

Lily Dale is home to only 275 people, with 50 registered mediums among them.

Even though it is a gated community, Lily Dale opens itself up to visitors throughout the year.

Your first stop should be the Lily Dale Museum, where you'll be able to dive into the town's long and fascinating history.

The community began as a small retreat that was incorporated in 1879 as the Cassadaga Lake Free Association, later changing its name to the City of Light in 1903 before becoming Lily Dale Assembly in 1906.

Lily Dale has all of the features you would expect to see in a charming small town. Everything is within walking distance, so can casually stroll through the village while popping into the various shops and cafes.

Many locations in town are dedicated to Spiritualism, the philosophical and religious movement focused on the belief that the spirits of the dead coexist and communicate with the world of the living.

The town and its Spiritualist mediums host public events and meetings throughout the year, with several services taking place outdoors in the forest, where you're surrounded by towering trees and peaceful nature trails.

As if this wasn't intriguing enough, there's even a Fairy Trail in the woods that features everything from gnomes to fairy homes and so much more.

Lily Dale welcomes curious visitors to explore the village and the practices of Spiritualism - and you should definitely be one of them. This tiny town is one of the most unique places in the world!
