1. Invention of the first implantable pacemaker
Good ol' Wilson Greatbatch of Buffalo is credited with creating the first ever implantable pacemaker in 1960. Since then, countless lives have been saved from his invention.
2. Invention of the air conditioner
Buffalo: Keeping it cool since 1902. You're welcome, world. The air conditioner is one of the many important Buffalo inventions. It was created by Willis Haviland Carrier for the Buffalo Forge Company.
4. Use of electric street lights
Buffalo is lit. Literally. We were the first city to utilize electric street lights, thanks to the Brush Electric Light Company of Buffalo.
5. Invention of the Buffalo wing
Where would we be without the Buffalo wing? The first taste of this now-famous Buffalo delicacy was had at The Anchor Bar, when Teressa Bellissimo accidentally invented it for late-night patrons.
6. Daycare centers in the U.S.
Maria M. Love created the first daycare center in the United States in Buffalo on Swan Street in Buffalo. The center was started to give working women a place to take their children for care.
7. Founding of the first cancer laboratory
Dr. Roswell Park was the director of the first cancer-dedicated laboratory, what is now known as Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Dr. Park saved countless lives and his initiatives and institute still in place today continue his lasting legacy.
9. Creation of dairy-free creamer
