If You Only Have One Day to Visit This Small Town in Arkansas, Here’s Everything You Absolutely Can’t Miss

Small towns and small cities like Searcy are the heart and soul of Arkansas. These are the places where you’ll find friendly folks, mom-and-pop shops, and charming Main Streets. Years ago, when I first visited Searcy, I was too young to appreciate the true essence of this delightful town. Back then, the Dairy Queen and the Walmart were the hotspots for the local teens. Some decades have passed, and this small city in White County has evolved tremendously. 

Over the years, local coffee shops, art galleries, and boutiques have filled the brick storefronts on historic Main Street. But while Searcy keeps humming and buzzing with youthful energy, what remains is that it’s a wonderful destination for a day trip in Arkansas. Here are several places that you absolutely must visit in Searcy if you only had one day to explore this charming town in Arkansas. 

With just under 25,000 residents, Searcy isn’t the smallest town in Arkansas. In fact, it’s the largest city in White County, but it still buzzes with a small-town vibe. It features a walkable downtown, charming boutiques, family-owned restaurants, historical landmarks, and recreational spaces, making it an ideal place for a weekend getaway or a road trip detour.  

Located just 60 miles north of Little Rock, Searcy is steeped in rich history, and you’ll find plenty of things to do here. Whether you’re an art lover, foodie, or nature enthusiast, the town has something for you to enjoy. Begin your day with a stroll through the historic downtown village, where you can find cute boutiques, art galleries, a historic theater, coffee shops, restaurants, and more. Art lovers, I recommend that you take the mural tour and capture some Instagram-worthy pics to add to your collection. Also, don’t skip the historic Benjamin Clayton Black House that has been transformed into an art gallery. The house was built in 1874, so if you’re a history buff, you’ll appreciate it too.

For more history, step back in time by visiting the charming Pioneer Village and experience what life was like for early settlers in the 19th century. The village is open daily for self-guided tours, but we suggest that you plan ahead and schedule a guided tour for more access to the log cabins and schoolhouse. As one of our favorite attractions in town, I can't recommend this place enough. Plus, the little ones will find value in learning about the bygone era - gone but not forgotten.    

You might not know it, but Searcy is a college town and home to Harding University, the largest private college in the state. The campus is absolutely lovely, surrounded by serene gardens, paved walkways, and water fountains. So, it’s a peaceful place for a leisurely stroll to soak up all its beauty. It’s especially pretty during the festive holiday season when the trees are illuminated with twinkling lights. Each year, folks from near and far gather to take pictures, drink hot cocoa, and marvel at the thousands of dazzling dripping lights.

If you want something more adventurous, carve out some time to hike one of the nearby trails. Riverside Park Overlook Trail is by far the best hiking trail in Searcy. The 2-mile out-and-back trek takes you on a journey alongside steep cliffs, where you’ll discover hidden caves, soak up the river views, explore large rock formations, and so much more. If you want to spend time on the water, I'd suggest bringing your fishing rod or your kayak for a peaceful afternoon here.  

No visit to Searcy would be complete without recommending some incredible spots to eat. Huckleberry's Catfish Buffet serves the best catfish and southern comfort food in town. However, we also love Wild Sweet William's Bakery, too. This beloved bakery in Arkansas has some of the delectable handmade kolaches and pastries that money can buy. Plus, if you're there for lunch, you don't want to miss the delicious sandwiches, salads, and hearty soups.  

Between the historical village, the pedestrian-friendly downtown, and the outdoor attractions, you can easily spend more than one day exploring the town of Searcy. So, I wouldn't blame you if you would like to see more of this charming small town in Arkansas. Why not stay for an extra day?
