The Outdoor Discovery Park In Arkansas That’s Perfect For A Family Day Trip

The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center in Fort Smith offers various outdoor and educational activities for families.

We Arkansans love the outdoors, its kind of our thing. There's nothing better than sharing that love with our children. Having them learn about nature and develop an appreciation for it ensures that the Natural State won't be changing slogans anytime soon.

Tucked out of the way in Fort Smith is the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center. Fort Smithians usually just call it the Huckabee Center.

The Huckabee Center is built on 170 acres of land in the Fort Chaffee area. It features Wells Lake and six small trails that cover about four miles.

The discovery center has quite a few different exhibit areas and a classroom. Families have access to learning activities and a small horde of nature books.

The Huckabee Center offers different weekly programs including a beginner's archery course. They also have a "nature break" for 3-7 year olds - so everyone in the family can have some educational fun.

During warmer months, the center offers canoeing and kayaking lessons. Canoes can also be checked out to enjoy on the lake if your family already knows the basics.

Another way to see live animals is through the "Critter Crunch." The animals residing inside the center are fed everyday at 2:00 p.m.

The Huckabee Center is a fantastic day trip for families. Arkansans are never too young to start learning about local wildlife or develop an appreciation of nature.

The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center is located at 8300 Wells Lake Road in Fort Smith.
