The Small Town in Arizona That Feels Like Halloweentown
Explore Jerome, Arizona, a small town straight out of Halloweentown with haunted hotels, ghost tours, quirky shops, and spooky hillside charm.
Do you ever wish you could escape the world for a bit and step into your favorite book or film? I sure do, and Arizona has plenty of opportunities to do just that. From the dusty streets of Tombstone, which looks like the set of an old Western, to Prescott’s charming town square that could’ve been plucked right out of a Hallmark movie, the Grand Canyon State is full of places that don’t even look real. One of my favorites is Jerome, Arizona, a small town straight out of "Halloweentown." This former mining boomtown has a distinctly eerie vibe, yet in a charming, cinematic way, much like the fictional town all 90s kids know and love. It’s always Halloween in Jerome, so if that’s your thing, you’ll love it here.

The story of Jerome is similar to that of many towns in the American Southwest. It was founded in the late 1800s after rich copper reserves were discovered in the area, and the population grew rapidly as people flocked to the town with hopes of hitting the jackpot. Thanks to financier William A. Clark and the United Verde Copper Company, Jerome was one of the most lucrative copper mining towns in the country.
By the early 1900s, Jerome was at its heyday with nearly 15,000 residents. The town earned the nickname “The Wickedest Town in the West” because of its numerous saloons, brothels, and overall rough, lawless atmosphere. In typical “boom-and-bust” fashion, the population plummeted after World War II, when the demand for copper fell. By the 1950s, only about 100 people remained, essentially turning Jerome into a ghost town.
Just a decade later, however, artists and hippies breathed new life into Jerome. They were drawn there by the promise of cheap property and the dramatic scenery; the town is perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of the Verde Valley. Abandoned buildings quickly became quaint shops, restaurants, and art galleries, and the close-knit community began welcoming tourists with open arms.
If you remember what "Halloweentown" looks like, it's full of lopsided buildings and a charming town square with lots of pumpkins. Jerome has a similar fantasy movie feel with its historic storefronts and stair-step streets carved into the hillside.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a small town straight out of "Halloweentown" without a few ghost stories, and Jerome has plenty to tell. It’s home to the infamous Jerome Grand Hotel, which was initially a hospital for miners that saw over 9,000 deaths. You can also visit the cemetery where many miners who died in tragic accidents are buried. Ghost tours are available if you really want to take a deep dive into the town’s spooky history. Jerome is often called one of the most haunted places in America, and it’s easy to see why. While it feels especially magical in the fall, Jerome is like Halloweentown in that Halloween isn't just a holiday; it's a way of life. That playfully eerie feeling is ever-present, and Halloween decorations are permanent fixtures on many downtown buildings.
"Halloweentown" blends Hallmark movie charm with whimsical spookiness, and Jerome does the same. It's essentially a real-world version of the fictional village, a place that embraces its folklore by making it part of everyday life. The residents may not be actual ghosts, witches, or monsters, but they are eccentric artists, musicians, and other creative types who never felt like they fit in anywhere else. The community's quirky charm and close-knit feel (along with the ghosts, of course) are what make it a small town straight out of "Halloweentown."

And if you want to meet some locals and learn more about Jerome's history, I highly recommend checking out the Haunted Hamburger. Not only is the food delicious, but the year-round Halloween decor, including life-sized skeletons climbing the exterior walls, really helps set the mood.

Both Jerome and Halloweentown are magical, but the difference is that Jerome's magic isn't fictional. It's real as can be, the culmination of the town's mining history, urban legends, strong community bonds, and spooky vibes, no matter the season.
