Escape to This Charming Mountain Town in Alabama Before Fall Ends

Boasting iconic covered bridges, festivals, and sweeping mountain views, Oneonta is the ultimate fall destination in Alabama.

It’s so refreshing to step out in the mornings and feel the cooler air kiss my cheeks. Knowing that fall is finally here in Alabama really warms my heart. Autumn is the season when I become more intentional, slowing down to enjoy the peaceful, fleeting moments. Whether it’s noticing the delicate leaves as they drift from an oak tree or the mist that hovers in the morning, the season beckons me to stop and pay attention.

Fall in Alabama is truly magical, and there is no better way to enjoy the season than in a cozy mountain town. Some of our favorite destinations include Mentone and Delta, but there is another charming town that is worth visiting, too. As one of our picks for the top mountain towns in Alabama to visit, Oneonta is wonderful no matter the time of year. But to experience the best that it has to offer, fall is when this destination really shines.

Why Visit Oneonta This Fall?

If you’re anything like me and prefer escaping to a destination that’s rustic and filled with nostalgic charm, then Oneonta is the place for you. Tucked away in the scenic foothills of the Appalachians, this charming mountain town in Alabama boasts natural beauty, community-focused events, and is within minutes of several covered bridges. Photographers, nature lovers, and solo travelers will feel right at home here, especially if you enjoy a slower pace without excessive crowds.

Oneonta is, in fact, a small city of 7,000, but you’ll discover small-town vibes as you explore. Although it’s right outside of Birmingham, Alabama’s second-largest city, Oneonta feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Its rolling hills, historic charm, and tight-knit community make it a wonderful destination for a day trip in Alabama in the fall

On a nice autumn day, a stroll through the downtown district is a must. Lined with mom-and-pop shops and historic early 20th-century buildings, you’ll find a bustling community moving to its own rhythm. Art lovers will discover several murals throughout the area that showcase the pride the folks have in their quaint district. There are also numerous historic sites and homes with stunning architecture worth seeing.

Things to Do in Oneonta in the Fall

Oneonta is located in Blount County, and as the self-proclaimed Covered Bridge Capital of the state, it only makes sense to plan a road trip to see these iconic covered bridges in Alabama. During the fall, the historical sites come alive when surrounded by gorgeous fall foliage, so don’t leave home without your camera.

What’s more? On October 11, Oneonta will host its annual Covered Bridge Festival. Some of the festivities include arts and crafts, live entertainment, a vintage car show, kids' games, tours, and more. Of course, there will be food and local vendors selling handmade items. It’s an event the entire family can enjoy.

Want more fall fun? Since Oneonta is surrounded by several mountain peaks, including Red Mountain, Straight Mountain, and Ebell Mountain, outdoor enthusiasts will have plenty of opportunity to soak up the beauty of the autumn season. Palisades Park is the go-to destination in the area. The park boasts pioneer cabins, a historic schoolhouse, an arboretum, and pavilions.

As you hike along the one-mile Palisades Park Nature Trail, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the rolling hills and the valley below. Leaf peepers will be inspired as they marvel at autumn’s beauty from the overlook at Inspiration Point. Expect the fall foliage in Alabama to peak between late October and early November, which is by far the best time to visit the area.

If you want to take your outdoor adventure to the next level, plan a trip to see Mardis Mill Falls in nearby Blountsville. The 10-foot waterfall along Graves Creek is one of the prettiest places to visit when the trees transform for the season.

Of course, you’ll need a place to rest after your day of exploring. And while you can opt for a hotel in town, I found a peaceful one-bedroom mountain retreat in nearby Blountsville that is spectacular in the autumn. With a wrap-around porch, you can spend your mornings soaking up the stillness of the countryside. Rustic and charming, this cabin will have everything you need to get you in the autumn spirit.
