What’s Hidden Underground In This City In Texas Is Unexpected But Awesome

Houston's underground tunnel system offers a unique way to experience shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Sometimes, the activities you used to find fun start getting old, and all you want is a little variety. Even in a city as big as Houston, there are only so many things to do: going out to eat, shopping, seeing concerts, etc. It's not that these things are inherently boring, but more so that you just need a change of pace from the places you usually frequent. So why not go underground? That's right - Houston has an entire system of tunnels hiding underneath it, connecting countless buildings together and providing an opportunity to experience your favorite above-ground activities in a whole new way.

The tunnels cover over 95 city blocks and extend 20 feet below the surface of Houston's downtown streets.

They were built in the 1930s by Ross Sterling, who was inspired by the similar tunnel system in New York City.

It's basically an underground shopping mall complete with retail stores and food courts.

The tunnels also link office towers to hotels, banks, government offices, and the Houston Theater District...all without ever emerging from beneath the city streets.

So whether you're looking to escape the brutal Texas summer heat or just do something different for a change...

...there are hundreds of ways to entertain yourself underneath the biggest city in the state.

Have you ever been to the underground Houston tunnels? What was your favorite thing to do there?
