If you weren't actively looking for Rathskeller Restaurant in Fredericksburg, chances are you'd never find it.
The award-winning eatery is tucked away in the basement of the old Keidel Memorial Hospital in downtown Fredericksburg. A beautiful, two-story rock building that dates to the 1800s, the former hospital is among the oldest structures in town.
Down a set of stairs and through a secret door you'll go before finally entering the restaurant. It feels as though you're discovering something few people are aware of!
Equal parts rustic and cozy, the dining room features the same stone walls seen on the outside of the building. The walls are adorned with old photos and artifacts, taking you on a fascinating journey through time.
As for the menu, it's as vast as it is varied. German specialties such as sausage and schnitzel honor Fredericksburg's heritage and give you a chance to try something new.
For dessert, don't miss their famous peach bread pudding with homemade caramel sauce! It's absolute heaven - especially when topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.
