This Wyoming Airbnb Has the Most Underrated Fishing Spot

When winter's gray days loom icy, dreary, and windy, Wyomingites can either be found flocking to the mountains to chase powder or curled up in front of a cozy fireplace in between snow runs. But as chilly mornings transform into long, sunshine-filled weekends, the state's numerous waterways begin to beckon with fresh promise — especially for those who enjoy casting a line every now and then.

For the hardy fisherman, there's no better place to be than a rustic cabin just steps away from a crystal-clear creek packed with runners and glittering with fresh snowmelt. Fortunately, our state has plenty to choose from! Fishing is one of those simple joys that has no age limit, and Wyoming's smaller, quieter creeks and rivers are often the best places to land a showstopper. Their pretty, tree-lined banks and private sandbars are perfect for a long weekend spent kicking back with a tacklebox, camping chair, and Ol' Reliable in hand, regardless of the day's catch. In anticipation of prime fishing season, we hit full sleuth mode and found an incredibly relaxing spot seemingly made for a day on the water, and it just so happens to include a gorgeous private cabin as well.

There's a lot to love about the Aspen Lodge in Centennial, Wyoming. This historic, family-built and owned 1950s cabin is tucked away at the base of the Snowy Mountains in the dreamiest setting.

The 12-acre property is flanked by wide-open pastures and beautifully enveloped by quiet nature trails, dense aspen trees, and even a private pond. It also sits right at the confluence of Libby and North Fork Creeks, which wind delicately through the property toward the nearby Medicine Bow National Forest. This spot is a hidden gem in many ways, but it's precisely this secluded setting that makes it so perfect for anyone looking for a quiet getaway and some uninterrupted time on the water.

The two creeks are tributaries of the mighty Laramie River, which has always been known for its abundant wild brown trout and rainbow trout. With Bald Mountain and Cabinet Mountain forming a stunning backdrop, this is the perfect place for anglers to cast a line in one of the creeks to try and reel in a few brook trout or whatever happens to be biting. It's also not unusual here to see small whitefish pooling around the river rocks, just like they have been for decades.

Up a few stairs and across a quaint footbridge, the spacious, historic cabin beckons with its simply decorated paneled walls filled with quintessential ranch touches. The exterior is sided with reclaimed Wyoming snowfence and, according to the owners, "is adorned with antlers from 70 years of successful elk hunts." This is as authentic as it gets!

Inside, the Aspen Lodge is much larger than it looks, full of modern amenities and comfy furnishings, with space aplenty to sleep six without having to break out any cots or sofa beds. It's a quaint slice of the past that feels like a true home away from home, with every room in the cabin thoughtfully decorated in ways that pay homage to a simpler time. Unique design details and built-ins fill the space with a historic charm that is missing from most modern cabins, like the checked wood ceiling and unexpected iron accents.

In winter, the large brick fireplace in the living room is a welcoming spot to curl up with a board game or a local fishing guide, while the large windows in every room each offer pretty views of the surrounding valley and the water. A large family-sized table makes up the heart of the home, and the cozy bedding and delicate curtains in the bedrooms are as welcoming as they come. You'll even find an office space if you can't bear to part with the internet for a few days (or if you find yourself inspired by the natural beauty outside).

But why stay indoors? The outdoor deck is big enough for the whole family, and the hot tub and fire pit are especially magical when enjoyed under the stars with the creek bubbling in the background. Or, if you have little ones in tow, the fishing pond near the main cabin is a great spot for a family outing on the water, complete with wild raspberries ripe for the picking and waterfront benches. Wherever you choose to relax, you'll find plenty of seating to enjoy every corner of the property, every sunrise and sunset, and even the majestic sight of deer and the resident horses loping through the valley. It really doesn't get much better than this.

Of course, you can always hit the nearby national forest trails if you feel like a deeper dive into the great outdoors! The Medicine Bow National Forest awaits, and the lodge is just minutes from endless skiing, snowmobiling, elk hunting, and high mountain hiking opportunities, depending on the season.

For those with fishing poles that have been collecting dust all winter, Wyoming's waterside abodes are a dream in the warmer months: easy access to early-morning trout coming up to feed, gorgeous settings, and expensive decks from which to admire everything that Wyoming has to offer. With a population of just over 300, Centennial is a sweet little town that's sure to steal a big piece of your heart, and this quiet Airbnb on the river is the perfect basecamp from which to enjoy its most peaceful side — ideally with a rod in hand.
