One weekend my family and I headed to Roan Mountain State Park Campground to spend the night. We wanted to stay here because we love the park and have been there many times, but we have never been to the campground. We didn’t know what to expect but once we arrived, the place absolutely blew us away. We loved this campground and let me tell you all there is to love about this place!
As we drove into the campground, the forest became thicker and the canopy overhead provided a nice cool covering from the hot sun.
This also gave us the feeling of being fully submerged in nature and leaving behind civilization for a wooded retreat. There are tons of sites available for tents and RVs, and they even have a spot for group camping. It should be noted that in a different section, they also have cabins for rent. We have seen these cabins and they look very nice, but we haven't stayed in one.
We were staying in a tent, which is one of our favorite ways to travel, and the site completely amazed us.
The ground was clean and they have an area for your tent marked out with wood on the ground. The site was incredibly spacious with ample room between us and the other tents. The campground was quiet and you truly felt like you had privacy. There was a large stone picnic table and a water source on site as well.
We booked a night simply to have a quiet retreat as a family and it was just what we needed. As the sun went down, we huddled around the fire pit and enjoyed some s'mores. We also did a little stargazing before retreating to bed for the night.
We were blessed to get a site right along the stream and the sound of trickling water and the crickets serenaded us to sleep.
The lovely flowing water has to be one of the most peaceful sounds, and I can't think of a more pleasing tone to my ears. For me, it is a sound that represents the forest. I feel at home when I am deep within the mountains and can hear the tranquil flow of a creek.
After having breakfast and a morning fire, we decided to climb down to the water and check it out.
Our girls splashed in the water, found sticks, and threw rocks into the stream, and I won’t lie, I did my fair share of it too. Having access to the water only a couple of steps from our tent was a great benefit and we loved it. Later on, we explored the campground and discovered three playgrounds, trails, and some recreational fields which included basketball and tennis courts.
Our purpose was to have a relaxing time in one of our favorite state parks. We not only received that, but so much more.
Slowing down the pace of life and just spending time together as a family was so nice and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to do the same. Our puppy loved the campground just as much as we did but then again, he’s happy no matter what we are doing as long as he is with us.
If you are wondering whether Roan Mountain State Park Campground is one of the best, I have to emphatically say yes! Plenty of space between sites, huge campsites, ample tree covering, and a flowing river are just a few of the things that make this a lovely place to camp for a peaceful weekend getaway. If you are looking to hike while you are in the park, make sure to head to the top of Roan Mountain and experience some of the best views in Tennessee, or stay right in the state park with many trails to explore. I would suggest Raven Rock Trail. Check out the video we made to learn all about this trail.
