Goat Island is one of the most unique destinations in South Carolina. The small barrier island has a fascinating history and can only be accessed by boat. A couple exiled themselves here in the 1930s and kept about 30 goats on the island, and lived here for many years in favor of a more rustic lifestyle without electricity or running water. The Charleston Fishing Lodge is an Airbnb on Goat Island that’s perhaps the most underrated fishing spot in South Carolina. The house is a two-minute boat ride from the Isle of Palms Marina and can only be accessed by boat. Guests can park their car at the marina for a fee and launch their own boat or arrange a charter through the owner.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom Airbnb can accommodate up to eight guests. The standard rate is for four people, and the owner requests that guests include the number of people staying in the reservation. 

Each bedroom has its own balcony with stunning views—the primary bedroom has three balconies! Every bedroom has waterfront views, so no one has to fight over who gets what room. I’d recommend waking up early to watch the sunrise—you might see dolphins!

This isn’t your traditional fishing camp; it’s a step above (in my opinion). Guests have a full kitchen with modern appliances, plenty of space to sprawl out, and, of course, ample outdoor attractions. The house runs on stored rainwater and is supplemented with well water. The tap water is not drinkable, and you will need to bring your own drinking water. 

When it comes to fishing, you have plenty of options. Guests have access to a paddleboard and can arrange for kayaks through the owner. There is a covered dock with a fish cleaning station with power and running water so that you can clean your catch of the day. Feel free to fish from the pier, go crabbing, or utilize a fishing charter.

Fishing charters are encouraged, and the owner operates a fishing charter/boat tour company called Charleston Fishfinder. Charters can be arranged for fishing excursions, or folks can choose a more sightseeing route and take a boat trip to explore the many barrier islands along the coast. 

One thing is certain: this place has the best sunsets in South Carolina. I can promise you that I would be sitting on that gazebo every single evening to watch Mother Nature put on a show!
