In 1776, General George Washington and his Continental Army soldiers set up camp on the land where the current inn now sits.

The inn, built after that historic period, is believed to have once served as a spot on the Underground Railroad, sheltering slaves on their way to freedom.

To this day, the inn boasts a secret staircase and a tunnel that leads outdoors, both believed to help hide the runaway slaves.

Today, one of those former slaves is said to remain in the inn. Sarah, a 12-year-old, is said to visit the youngest guests during their stay at the inn.

Sarah’s not a spirit of whom to be afraid. Rather, she appears lonely and reaches out to the children who visit, likely in hopes of finding new friends.
