The Castle in the Clouds, in Moultonborough, is one of the most exceptional places to spend a night in New Hampshire.
The 16-room mansion sits on a rocky outcropping on Lee Mountain. It's located on 5,500-acres overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains.
The private home, originally named "Lucknow, was build between 1913 and 1914 by Thomas Gustave Plant, a millionaire shoe manufacturer.
Unfortunately, Plant lost his money in bad investments and was forced try selling the home to pay his debts in the early 19040s. No buyer was found and he stayed in the house until he died. At this point, the property was bought by the Fred C. Tobey estate.
And, in 1956, The Tobeys opened it to the public as a as a tourist attraction.
One walk around the grounds and you can see why people would have wanted to come see it.
Beginning in 2006, the home has been owned and operated by Castle Preservation Society.
The views are spectacular from May through October, when the property is open to the public.
As much as possible, things have been kept original, including rooms that are set up as if the original family was still living here. There are even some fun building innovations that were new for the time, including a central vacuum system, ammonia brine refrigeration and an intercom system.
A visit today means exploring the grounds to take in the vast beauty.
There are 28 miles of hiking trails around Castle in the Clouds, which are managed by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust.
And, when you're ready to relax inside you can visit the Carriage House Restaurant.
Enjoy some decidedly modern beverages, like the impressive Mountain Buster Bloody Mary made with Tamworth Distillery's White Mountain Vodka and topped with a mini burger.
Then, enjoy knowing that you're experiencing a piece of New Hampshire history from high atop the state!
