The One Park In Montana With Caves, Camping, And Trails Truly Has It All
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park offers stunning limestone caverns, scenic hikes, and diverse camping options, making it a top travel destination in Montana.
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park was Montana's first official state park, and to this day, it remains one of the most popular spots for Montanans on vacation. While the cavern itself is absolutely fantastic, there's much more to the park than that. After you've explored the caves, you can take a scenic hike and find a perfect place to camp.
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park is located in Whitehall, about 19 miles from Three Forks.
President Theodore Roosevelt used the name Lewis & Clark when he made the caverns a National Monument, which just happened to be on the same day the Grand Canyon received the honor.
The cavern itself is magnificent and one of the most highly decorated limestone caverns in the Northwest.
Tours are led daily by friendly local guides, and they typically take about two hours to complete. Standard tours are offered from May 1 through September 30.
The caverns are naturally cool, so summer tours are especially amazing.
There are standard tours and special themed tours, like the Winter Holiday Candlelight Tour in December.
The park encompasses 3,015 acres, including some wonderful hiking trails perfect for all skill levels.
This part of Montana has a unique rugged beauty you can't help but love.
The park has a large campground with 40 campsites, three cabins, and a tipi.
There's even a group camp area you can reserve by calling the park.
This park really does have something for everyone, and the location can't be beat.
You can even use it as a base camp for other state parks in the area, as well as the adjacent Jefferson River.
If you've never explored Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park, there's still plenty of time this summer to see all it has to offer. And if you're looking for an absolutely beautiful place to camp, try one of these state parks.
