The History Behind This Remote Hotel In Montana Is Both Eerie And Fascinating

More than 100 years ago, the Great Northern Railway helped promote legislation that established Glacier National Park. Several hotels, chalets, boats, roads, and trails were designed and built to attract tourists, one of which was the elegant Many Glacier Hotel.

Many Glacier Hotel is located in the heart of Glacier National Park, on a rocky ledge by the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake.

It's a peaceful place, although it looks a little eerie when the fog rolls in.

Many Glacier Hotel was completed in 1917, and at one time, it was the largest hotel in Montana.

Several hundred men worked on the construction. A sawmill, erected near the hotel site, fashioned thousands of boards from trees which were cut down inside the park.

Louis Hill, the Great Northern Railway's president, chose the Many Glacier valley for the location.

And it must have been the perfect location because apparently some guests never left.

There have been rumors of hauntings here for decades.

Many guests have reported seeing, hearing or sensing strange things.

One young boy got the surprise of his life when he looked up to see a woman in a red dress in his hotel room.

The woman eventually vanished.

The late Steve Lautenbach was the winter caretaker at Many Glacier for years, describing the place as "mystical."

"It talks to you," he said in 2006. "Sometimes you feel like it's alive — you sense it. Those mountains up there are just glowing, just powerful, and here it is. You have to respect it."

Are the strange sounds just the creaks and groans of an old building, or is the hotel actually haunted?

We may never know for sure — but we do know that this is an important piece of the park's history.
