This Treehouse Airbnb in Missouri Is Peak Fall Vibes
Sleep among the trees on a magical fall getaway near Kansas City, Missouri.
When I was a kid, I thought my neighbor’s treehouse was the coolest thing. We could climb the steps to reach a place all our own, hovering in a wind-swept cloud of leaves as we looked out on the tiny world below. While that treehouse may not have actually been as grand as it is in my memories, the Robber’s Roost Tree House Airbnb truly is. Located near Exclesior Springs, Missouri, this rustic getaway has peak fall vibes.
The Robber’s Roost Tree House is a true getaway from the hustle of everyday life. Located on the 200-acre Sundance Ranch KC, this phenomenal Airbnb is practically off-grid—but, don’t worry, the hosts have thoughtfully considered your needs and provide everything you need for a cozy stay. As you drive deep into the forest and climb up the wooden stairs, you’ll feel your shoulders relax and your breath slow. It is time to take in the serenity.
When Mother Nature’s fall show abounds with colors, the Robber’s Roost is the perfect place to absorb the views. While many tall, skinny Airbnbs are labeled as “treehouses,” very few are actually built in the trees, unlike the Robber’s Roost, which is fixed between massive trunks. You’ll be able to spend your days on the wrap-around porch, looking out on a symphony of leaves.
The views are almost as stunning inside the treehouse, where walls of windows showcase the landscape. On crisp fall days, you can let in the breeze while you relax in the plush queen bed. If the temperatures dip and you feel a chill, you can warm up with a blazing propane fireplace. Not only will it heat your toes, it will add a touch of romance to the treehouse ambiance. Or, head out to the stone fire pit, where the sound of the crackling flames adds the perfect soundtrack to your fall getaway.
While the views from the porch and the firepit seem unbeatable, the Robber’s Roost has a hidden feature: a 15-acre, spring-fed private lake with an outdoor living room perch on a rocky bluff. A handful of rentals share this community area, but you are sure to find your own quiet time for a visit. Head down to the lake to borrow the paddleboard or kayaks, fish from the dock, or stroll the sandy swim beach for more active ways to enjoy the scenery. Sunsets are simply magical.
This autumnal getaway doesn’t include indoor plumbing or electricity; however, you will find a lithium battery pack for charging your phones, a French press for preparing your morning coffee, and a kettle for warming water on the stove. At the base of the treehouse, a quaint outhouse features a composting toilet and foot-pump sink. Yes, you are “roughing it,” but that only adds to the adventure.
Since the Robber’s Roost is only five minutes from downtown Excelsior Springs and doesn’t have a kitchen, you may want to head into town for a meal. The historic family-owned Willow Springs Mercantile is a quaint spot for lunch, while the Ventana Gourmet Grill is a cozy spot for an intimate dinner. For more outdoor fun, explore the many under-appreciated state parks in the Kansas City region.

Before you book your stay, consider the best timeframe to experience Missouri’s fall foliage. Before long, you’ll be snuggled up in front of a fire, leaf peeping from your own cozy cabin in the trees. This sounds like way more fun than my neighbor’s treehouse.
