The Minnesota Resort Where You Can Go Ice Skating, Make Homemade S’mores, And More This Winter

Gunflint Lodge in northern Minnesota offers a variety of winter activities and unique experiences for travelers.

In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, we celebrate winter, and one of the best ways to do so is to head out to a Minnesota resort for winter activities of all kinds. Gunflint Lodge and Outfitters, near the Canadian border, is just such a resort.

Not surprisingly, the venerable Gunflint Lodge is located on Gunflint Lake, just off the Gunflint Trail, in far northern Minnesota.

Although a popular year-round destination, its latitude makes the resort an excellent option for lovers of winter activities - many of which are available right on the property.

Every winter, the resort creates and maintains a small rink and offers complimentary ice skate loans to its guests.

You can also set out on some of the most beautiful Nordic ski trails in the state directly from lodge.

You’ll find ample opportunities for snowshoeing the area, as well.

Rent a fat bike from the lodge and explore the shoreline of Gunflint Lake.

Gunflint Lodge also offers fish houses and shelters for ice anglers.

Snowmobiling is a popular activity at the resort, and it offers rentals for licensed riders.

Those hoping to see the famous denizens of Minnesota’s North Woods - like moose and wolves - may enjoy one of Gunflint’s ATV tours.

For a more low key adventure, hop on a horse-drawn sleigh ride and cuddle up with your favorite person or people.

No matter what you do, settle in for some s’mores when you get back to the lodge.

Check out Gunflint Lodge’s website for reservations, specials - it offers several winter packages - and available activities. On your way to or from the resort, be sure to stop by Gunflint Mercantile in Grand Marais for some of the best fudge the North Star State has to offer. If you need lunch while you’re in town, the fish and chips from Fisherman’s Daughter is a tasty option.
