This Secluded Log Cabin Is the Perfect Home Base for Massachusetts’ Best Hiking Trails
Nestled on a secluded two acres, this log cabin is the perfect home base to use while you explore some of the best hiking trails in Massachusetts.
Where do you think the best hiking trails in Massachusetts reside? Do you prefer to stick to eastern Massachusetts and take in the views along the Skyline Trail in the Blue Hills Reservation? Or do you prefer to head west to explore a more mountainous landscape? There is no wrong answer.
For me, the answer is always the Berkshires. They were the first mountain range I fell in love with, and they will always have a piece of my heart. I did two summers at the Williamstown Theatre Festival (shoutout to all my WTF alum!) and I've clocked hundreds of hours staring at this dreamy landscape. There are countless hiking trails in this area, and this secluded log cabin is the perfect home base for exploring some of the best trails in Massachusetts. Let's check it out:
Welcome to Florida! Florida, Massachusetts, that is. This tiny town in Berkshire County puts you in the perfect location to explore some of the region’s best attractions, including the Mohawk Trail State Forest, Savoy Mountain State Forest, and my personal favorite side quest: the Hoosac Tunnel.
The two-bedroom, one-bath cabin has four beds and can comfortably accommodate up to four guests. The secluded log cabin is nestled within two acres of old-growth forest, making you feel like you’re the only one around for miles.
There are so many hiking trails nearby, I don’t know where to start. One of my favorites is the North Pond Loop at Savoy Mountain State Forest. There’s a three-mile loop that takes you around the lake and into the forest, but you can also combine it with some other trails to make a longer, eight-mile loop. Feel free to cool off in the water! It can be a bit chilly, but it’s very refreshing.
If you’re up for a little bit of a drive, head west along the Mohawk Trail (one of the most scenic drives in Massachusetts) and over to Mount Greylock. You’ll drive past the iconic hairpin turn as you make your way into North Adams, which offers breathtaking views of the town and the Taconic Mountains.
There are dozens of trails within Mount Greylock State Reservation. Sure, you could drive straight to the summit, but what's the fun in that? The Bellows Pipe Trail is a nearly six-mile out-and-back trail that’s considered a challenging route, but pays off when you see the views. The Appalachian Trail also crosses through the mountain, and you’re likely to encounter other hikers on your outing. Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts (3,489 feet), and the views from the summit are just dreamy. For a forest hike, check out the Bernard Farm Trail, which will take you past the site of a 1988 plane crash.
If you don’t want to drive to Greylock, consider checking out The Cascades Trail. It’s a two-mile out-and-back trail in North Adams, and it’s one of my favorites. The trailhead can be tricky to find (it's near the main entrance to the elementary school), but once you find it, you’re in for a treat. I love this trail, especially once you get further in and are surrounded by a dense forest with vibrant shades of green. If you’re up for a bit of scrambling, head down into the “valley” to get a better view of the waterfall.
After an exhausting day of hiking adventures, return to the cabin and get a fire going before turning your eyes to the skies and doing a little stargazing. Sounds like the perfect weekend getaway, right?
