In fact, the scant population of this small community almost triples during peak tourist season. That said, if you're an introverted traveler like me, you should plan your visit to avoid these crowds. Make no mistake, this historic hotel will dazzle you in all weather, fair or foul.

The story of The Norumbega begins with one visionary Mainer, Joseph Barker Stearns. After earning his fortune revolutionizing fire alarm and telegraph technology, Stearns settled in beautiful Camden.

Working with New York architect G.B. Jennings, he imagined a lavish and modern home that would be the envy of everyone for miles. When construction on his mansion was completed in 1887, the locals had already dubbed it "The Stone Castle by the Sea."

The building remained a private residence for the next 135 years until it was purchased by William Tims and his partner, Brett Haynie. Together, they refurbished the mansion, converting it into a high-end hotel.

It debuted as The Norumbega in 2022, honoring Stearns' private name for his magnificent home.
