This Kansas Silo Rental Is a Quirky, Magical Escape
This converted silo in Manhattan, Kansas, offers a unique and cozy stay. With its rustic charm and modern touches, it’s a great getaway for fans of 'Somebody Somewhere.'
When you think of Kansas, you probably picture endless wheat fields, smoky BBQ, and the occasional tornado... and, of course, it reminds us of The Wizard of Oz. But "television tourism?" Not exactly top of mind. That is, until I found myself completely captivated by Kansas for one surprising reason: a little HBO show called Somebody Somewhere. If you haven’t watched yet, let me tell you why this show has totally stolen my heart, and why it might just make you want to pack your bags and visit Kansas, too.
Somebody Somewhere isn’t just a show; it’s a revelation. Bridget Everett stars as Sam, a middle-aged woman searching for herself in the small-town world of Manhattan, Kansas, after one of her sisters passed away. It sounds simple on paper, but the execution is pure magic.
At its heart, the show is all about acceptance, of others, of your past, and above all, of yourself. Sam, messy and vulnerable, feels like someone you know personally. She is so relatable that it’s impossible not to root for her. She’s surrounded by a stellar cast, including her quirky best friend Joel (played flawlessly by surprise Emmy winner Jeff Hiller).
And the setting? Manhattan, Kansas - “The Little Apple” - becomes a character in itself. It doesn’t shy away from the challenges of small-town life, but highlights its charm. Church basements double as gathering spaces, wide-open landscapes feel both isolating and freeing, and locations like the community center (where Sam and Joel host their variety show) or the local diner (where secrets spill over coffee) make you want to jump through the screen and join in on the fun.
When I finally make my trip to Kansas, I know exactly where I’m staying: the Owls Nest Silo in Elmdale. It’s an hour outside of Manhattan, but trust me, it’s worth the drive.
This 45-foot, century-old silo has been turned into a quirky four-story retreat that’s as charming as the show itself. On the first floor, you’ll find a full kitchen—perfect for brewing your morning coffee while gazing out at the rolling Flint Hills. The cozy living room is ideal for curling up with a book or rewatching Somebody Somewhere on your laptop. The second-floor bedroom has a charming (and functional) bunk bed setup that’ll make you feel right at home.
On the third floor, you'll find a spacious bathroom with dual vanities and a walk-in shower - simple, but comfortably luxurious. The fourth floor, however, is where it really shines: a king-sized bed beneath 15-foot ceilings, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. Outside, a covered patio with a grill and fire pit offers a great spot to unwind while the Kansas sky takes center stage. Whether you're looking to relax, reflect, take in the views, or let your Somebody Somewhere fanfic run wild in your imagination, this unique Airbnb offers more than just a place to stay - it’s an experience.
Visiting Kansas isn’t just about staying in a cool silo - it’s about soaking up the essence of Somebody Somewhere and the true spirit of the state. Check out the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, where Sam and Joel might pass by during one of their impromptu adventures. And if you’re flying in, keep an eye on flight deals (thanks, Dollar Flight Club!) - because who doesn’t love a good deal?
So grab your remote, start watching, and let Somebody Somewhere remind you of the power of finding your people and owning your story. And when you’re ready to experience that magic in real life, Kansas -and maybe even a cozy silo in the Flint Hills - will be waiting for you.
