This Iowa Airbnb Is Like Stepping Onto the Set of a John Wayne Film
You'll feel like you've stepped onto the set of a John Wayne film at this Iowa Airbnb.
I remember the sound of John Wayne's voice echoing through the halls of my childhood home. My dad frequently had the TV dial set to the Western channel, and I can still hear the characters from The Alamo and True Grit floating around in the background. Perhaps it was the continuous cycle of John Wayne films and TV shows that filled my childhood or our many trips out west that instilled a deep love of the American cowboy in me. Whether it's the hardworking ranchers or riding off into the sunset, there's something about the nostalgia of the American West that speaks to me. Maybe that's why I'm so drawn to a little Airbnb called the Tack Shed in McGregor, Iowa.
Just a stone’s throw away from the Wisconsin border, this tiny shed is reminiscent of a traditional bunkhouse used by cowboys in the Old West. The pickings are slim here, and that’s part of its charm. An enclosed outdoor shower and sink are available, but to use the restroom, you’re going to need to pay a visit to the side entrance of the host’s home, which is a few steps away. Occasionally, one of the host’s friendly horses may pop its head into the outdoor shower space.
Otherwise, you’re living like a true cowboy on a ranch. There’s a steep loft with a large bed and window overlooking the property for you to catch some shut-eye. For cooking, there’s a hot plate, mini fridge, and outdoor grill for preparing basic meals. In true cowboy fashion, a variety of cast-iron items are available for use. There’s even an old wood-burning stove to make use of.
There’s no air conditioning, so open a screened window and enjoy the smells of the prairie. That said, remember you’re sharing your space with horses and the owner’s friendly dog. You may hear a few rogue neighs and smell an approaching visitor or two. Don’t be surprised if a fly finds its way into your space. It’s part of the experience.
If you’re looking for luxury, the Tack Shed isn’t the place for you. However, if you’re like me and you want a taste of how the cowboys roughed it, you couldn’t have stumbled upon a more perfect spot. Cowhide boots hang on the porch, and old farm tools adorn the exterior walls. Inside, you’ll find saddles and reins, as well as other items that the host actually uses for his day-to-day care of the animals and property.
In our ever-connected digital world, it can feel almost impossible to step away. Yet, the Tack Shed in eastern Iowa lets you step away for just a little while. While sitting on the porch with your morning coffee in hand, listening to the horses play, it's all too easy to imagine a time when the heroes of our favorite westerns moseyed up to the hitching post.
