Why Winter Is This Iowa Town’s Secret Season

The incredible beauty of the Mississippi Valley combines with historic charm to make McGregor one of the best winter towns in Iowa

The far northeast corner of Iowa is one of the state's least populated areas, which means there are a lot of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. This part of the Mississippi River valley is renowned for its fall foliage, but did you know that it's quite spectacular when the snow flies, as well? When winter rolls around in the Hawkeye State, the Driftless Area transforms into a frosty wonderland. If you ask me, the charming and historic town of McGregor is the perfect place to stay when you explore the region. In fact, I'd say it's one of the best winter towns in Iowa - especially for nature lovers.

Pikes Peak State Park, with its sweeping views of the Mississippi River valley, waterfalls and miles of hiking trails is practically right in town. It's definitely one of my personal favorites among Iowa's fantastic state parks.

McGregor is just a few minutes south of fascinating Effigy Mounds National Monument - one of only four National Park Service units in Iowa and the only one in the northern half of the state. This park is situated on the bluffs of the Mississippi River and preserves one of the largest clusters of preColumbian, Native American burial mounds in the country. Many of them were built in the shape of animal effigies (hence the name).

In winter, the shapes of the mounds may well be obscured, but incredible sense of place, beautiful wooded views, and spectacular vistas out over the Mississippi will are still here to enjoy. The hike definitely has some elevation gain - most of it front-loaded at the beginning of the trail - so you'll probably want snowshoes or traction devices on your boots for the hilly portions of the climb.

Set up your base camp for exploring this gorgeous slice of northeast Iowa at a historic Airbnb rental located right in downtown McGregor. The American House 1854 is a rental in a historic building - the oldest in town - that's almost as old as the state, itself. Treat yourself to the Pocket City Penthouse Suite, which can accommodate up to six guests in two bedrooms and one bath. It's also perfect for just cozying up with your favorite traveling companion and watching the snow fall.

For a winter getaway in Iowa, I don't think you could do a whole lot better than McGregor. Have you visited this part of the state at this time of year? We'd love to hear about your picks for the best winter towns in Iowa.
