You Can Sleep and Feed Animals at This Airbnb in Illinois

Get up close and personal with kangaroos at the Cabin at Kamaroo in Kampsville, Illinois.

One of my childhood dreams was to feed kangaroos. While I’ve been to Australia, I didn’t think the opportunity to fulfill such a dream was possible in Kampsville, Illinois. The Cabin at Kamaroo Farms allows guests to sleep in a comfortable modern cabin while still getting up close and personal with the owner’s wildlife.

When you arrive at the Cabin at Kamaroo, you’ll be treated to a short ATV ride to access your accommodations. Once there, you’ll head into a modern single-story cabin. The main floor includes your standard bedroom with a queen-sized bed. However, two queen beds are also available if you wish to climb the ladder to the loft. Altogether, the home comfortably sleeps six and is perfect for young families. Additionally, the home includes a kitchen, a living room, and a covered front patio. A barbecue and fire pit are also available.

Of course, the star of the show are the animals. Those staying at the Cabin at Kamaroo are welcome to explore the grounds and get to know the animals. Meet exotic animals, such as the aforementioned kangaroos, as well as camels, ostriches, emus, and many more. The owners also offer opportunities to learn more about the care of more familiar farm animals like rabbits, sheep, and goats.

Interestingly, if you happen to own a small plane, you can access this Airbnb via their private airstrip. But if you’re driving, you’re about 90 minutes southwest of Springfield, Illinois. When enjoying your stay at the Cabin at Kamaroo, you’ll find a trail leading to an “old abandoned gold mine.” Here, kids will love digging in a sandpit in search of “crystals” and “gold,” for which they can exchange for prizes.

The property is a part of Kamaroo Farms, so you will likely encounter other visitors walking around the grounds during the day. Private farm tours are available to visitors. That said, your cabin is tucked in its own section to ensure your privacy and the ability to sit back and unwind. Due to its remote location, cell phone service and WiFi can be spotty. I suggest taking this time to disconnect and soak in the views of the surrounding forest and pond. Who needs to answer that Slack message when there are kangaroos to feed?

If you’re looking to explore beyond the property, the town of Kampsville offers small-town cafes and restaurants. Some popular spots include Dick's Riverside Bar and Grill and The Landing. Or, enjoy some trails along either the Illinois or Mississippi Rivers, just a short drive away in either direction. A handful of wineries are located about 45 minutes north of the farm.

At the end of the day, the Cabin at Kamaroo offers an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and make new memories with your loved ones. Whether you’re feeding kangaroos, enjoying the views, or simply relaxing in the coziness of your private cabin, this experience invites you to slow down and savor the simplicity of the great outdoors.
