There’s A Bed & Breakfast Hidden In An 1880 Countryside Mansion In Illinois That Feels Like Heaven

Cloran Mansion Bed & Breakfast in Galena offers historic charm, modern amenities, and a picturesque setting for a relaxing getaway.

There are tons of cool and unique places to stay in Illinois. Whether it's a charming cabin or a luxury resort, the best places to stay in Illinois all have something in common: lots of character and the amenities you need for a relaxing stay. Personally, I always look for something that also has a historic twist — I love the thought of my accommodation being a place where stories were made. If you're like me and enjoy a private, heavenly getaway with plenty of space to stretch out, then you'll likely love this hidden gem bed and breakfast in Galena, Illinois.

Cloran Mansion Bed & Breakfast, 1237 Franklin St., is found in the charming, historic small town of Galena.

The stately home dates back to 1880 and offers a mix of Italiante-style elegance, countryside simplicity, and modern-day amenities. The home features five guest rooms, plus a small standalone cottage, and plenty of outdoor space for relaxing and recreation.

The home was built by John and Anny Cloran, who moved to the city in the 1840s from Ireland. The couple ran a store on Main Street in the location where the Great American Popcorn Company operates today.

The mansion is set against the picturesque backdrop of Galena, which sits just east of the Mississippi River. The Galena River flows through the town, which is surrounded by rolling hills, meadows, and farms.

Its idyllic downtown is designated as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places and features amazing local restaurants, shops, bars, and entertainment experiences. It's one of my favorite places to visit in the state.

On the grounds of Cloran Mansion, visitors can spread out on the 1.5 acres to enjoy a gazebo, swing for two, fire pit, patio, and a 1,600-gallon pond, complete with a waterfall.

The breathtaking landscape also makes Cloran Mansion a great place for small weddings.

Visitors can start their day with a full country breakfast including locally-produced meats, fresh fruit, homemade breads, eggs, coffee, and more in the beautifully-decorated dining room, with seatings at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

There are several room options to choose from and each comes with its own bathroom. The Tower Room sleeps two in a King bed, features a remote-controlled gas fireplace, and a bathroom with a private staircase that leads to an old, secret tower in the home. Amenities also include a whirlpool tub, chandelier, and mini-fridge.

Two more guests can find solace in Ann's Room, which sleeps two in a Queen-sized bed beneath a gorgeous cathedral ceiling. Add in the double-jacuzzi tub, stained glass windows, detailed wood carvings, and another fireplace, and you may never want to leave this room.

Alice's Room is light and airy with a sophisticated farmhouse feel, perfect for up to two guests. The room is on the smaller side, making it a great option for those who plan to explore the area and just need a clean, cozy place to sleep. Still, it features a fireplace, standing shower with soft bathrobes, and complimentary water and pop.

Those who need a little more space may be partial to Antonio's Cottage, which is just outside the main home. Complete with a Queen bed and a Queen sofa sleeper, this option can host up to four people.

Fun fact: Antonio's Cottage is pet-friendly for a $10 fee per day. It's also one of two rooms that are kid-friendly for those 12 and under!

The cottage features a gas fireplace next to a double jacuzzi for a romantic evening, as well as a 32-inch television, Keurig machine for coffee, and a kitchenette with a microwave, small refrigerator, and utensils, glasses, and plates.
