The Amazing Campground in Illinois We Want to Visit All-Year Round

Kickapoo State Recreation Area is one of our favorite places for year-round camping in Illinois

With all the incredible natural beauty we have in the Land of Lincoln, it's no wonder that Illinoisans love outdoor recreation so much. Whether it's boating, hunting, fishing, swimming, hiking, or anything else you can imagine, folks in the Prairie State are up for it. If you ask me, though, I don't think there's a better way to get out and enjoy nature than camping in Illinois, which, if you're up for it, is something that can be enjoyed all year long. Whether you're a single season camper or, like me, don't mind a late spring or early fall outing, or a diehard winter bivouacker, you'll be glad to know there are plenty of options for year-round camping in Illinois. And Kickapoo State Recreation area has one of my favorite four-season campgrounds in the state.

Kickapoo State Recreation Area is comprised of more than 2,800 wooded acres, dotted 22 lakes and ponds, many of which are deep and clear enough for scuba diving. The pristine Middle Fork of the Vermilion River - the only designated wild and scenic river in the Land of Lincoln - winds its way through the park. And one of the reasons I think this is such a great spot for year-round camping is all there is to do at Kickapoo.

In warmer months, paddling, fishing, swimming, camping, and hiking are all popular activities in the park. Canoe, tube, and kayak rentals, as well as a shuttle service for those paddling or floating the Middle Fork, are available through the park's concession between April and October. You'll also find bait, ice, and firewood there.

With its 22-mile trail network, Kickapoo is a mecca for hikers any time of year. The eight-mile-plus Kickapoo State Park Trail is one of our favorite trails in Illinois, but there are plenty of other options to choose from. Check out AllTrails Plus for reviews and downloadable maps of the trails at Kickapoo State Recreation Area.

In winter, hiking and camping remain popular activities, along with ice fishing, ice skating, snowshoeing, sledding, and cross-country skiing, when conditions allow. In other words, there's no shortage of adventures to be had at Kickapoo SRA.

A camping trip to Kickapoo State Recreation Area is wonderful in any season - you can see why it's my go-to spot for year-round camping in Illinois! Peak season for camping in Illinois state parks is May 1 through September 30. Any visit made between October 1 and April 30 is considered "winter camping." One thing I really appreciate, though, is that a shower building is open year-round at Kickapoo. Camping reservations are available May 1 through October 31, and anything outside that timeframe is available on a first-come, first-served basis. During off-peak times, permits can be obtained directly from the campground hosts. What is your favorite time of year to camp at Kickapoo State Recreation Area? Do you have any other favorite spots for year-round camping in Illinois? Be sure to tell us about them!
