You can certainly spend multiple days at Craters of the Moon National Monument and when you do, there is one place to stay — Lava Flow Campground.
This unique campground in Idaho is surrounded by lava flow, and it is the only designated campground in the area.
There are 42 campsites available that are large enough for RVs. However, no hookups are available. The campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis so you will not want to wait to ensure you receive a place to stay.
The scenery in this campground is certainly worth exploring. The lava rocks, jagged hills, and random vegetation make you feel like you are far away and definitely not in Idaho.
The Lava Flow Campground is also near the Visitor’s Center and many popular hikes, so it is easy to explore and to see even more of what this unique area has to offer.
However, even when darkness falls, this campground is mesmerizing. Because it sits within an International Dark Sky Park, you can expect the most gorgeous night sky with thousands of stars.
Throughout Craters of the Moon, staff members have worked hard to make sure the park’s lighting does not affect the beauty in the sky. It is easy to sit back and enjoy the beauty high above you.
The Lava Flow Campground is certainly one of the most unique campgrounds in Idaho and one place to stay that must be high on your bucket list.
The Lava Flow Campground is open to vehicles from April to November or when Loop Road opens. If you desire to snow camp, you can hike into the campground during the winter months. You can learn more on the National Park Service website.
