City of Rocks National Reserve is one of the most unique destinations in Idaho. Located in southern Idaho near the small town of Almo, this national reserve is known as the “Silent City of Rocks,” and is where you will find mesmerizing rock formations, Idaho beauty, inspiring stargazing, and excellent camping. In fact, City of Rocks Campground is one of our favorite places to spend some time outdoors.
City of Rocks is the ultimate outdoor playground. This destination attracts individuals from around the world with its incredible rock climbing and hiking.
In 2023, this reserve also received certification to become an International Dark Sky Park and here, you can see some truly extraordinary night skies.
And there is no better place to witness these night skies than at the City of Rocks Campground. This camping destination features 69 standard campsites and three group sites.
Keep in mind that many of the campsites do not allow for recreational vehicles. The majority of the campsites are tent only. There are nearly a dozen campsites for RVs up to 18 feet long and nearly 20 campsites for RVs up to 28 feet long.
However, no matter which type of campsite you choose, you can expect to be surrounded by beauty. Most campsites offer remarkable views of the rock formations, and if you are lucky, you can even enjoy some shade from aspen, pine, or juniper trees.
All campsites have a fire-ring/ground grill and a picnic table. There are also vault toilets and drinking water is available seasonally.
Because City of Rocks is such a popular destination, reservations are required throughout the year. There are no walk-in sites at this campground but reservations can be made on the same day as your arrival. During the summer months, we recommend making reservations early as this campground can be quite busy.
City of Rocks Campground is easily one of the best campgrounds in Idaho. This unique destination is not only beautiful during the day, but also in the night. You’ll love it here.
Local tip: If the City of Rocks Campground is full, take a look at Smoky Mountain Campground, which is approximately two miles away.
