Get Away From It All At This Remote And Beautiful Campground In Southern California

When you want to get away - and I mean, really get *away* - from it all, might I suggest a little trip to the rugged and beautiful Channel Islands National Park? This is one of Southern California's must-see natural wonders, and I can tell you from experience how awesome it really is. Just off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara, the islands are a perfect place to leave civilization and immerse yourself in natural beauty... and to find a little adventure, too! Though you can take a day trip to one of the islands, to really disconnect and recharge, consider a stay at the amazing Scorpion Campground on Santa Cruz Island.

Santa Cruz is the largest of the Channel Islands and is a nature-lover's paradise, characterized by spectacular landscapes and views to match.

When I say this campground is remote, I mean it is located in the hills on the eastern part of the island, accessible only by foot from the pier at Scorpion Anchorage. To reach the island, book boat ride with Island Packers in Ventura.

There are two sections to the campground, Upper and Lower, each with plenty of space to breathe. Pitch your tent on one of the primitive sites among the eucalyptus trees and begin your off-grid escape. Vault toilets, picnic tables, food storage boxes, and water are available for use by campers.

Miles of scenic hiking trails let you explore the island and enjoy the varied landscapes and breathtaking views.

Take in views of Potato Harbor from one of the incredible vista points. There is no beach access from above due to the steep, rugged. cliffs, but the cove can be explored by boat or kayak.

The campground offers easy access to a sand and cobblestone beach so get ready for relaxing days on the shore, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and more. Keep in mind that there are no services on the island, so you'll need to arrange for kayak rentals ahead of time.

Speaking of kayaking, if you are up for a unique adventure, schedule a guided tour of the island's sea caves. Kayak and snorkeling packages for beginners to advanced water adventurers are available through Channel Islands Adventure Company.

There is a variety of wildlife on Santa Cruz, including the adorable Island Fox, which is actually not found anywhere else in the world. These cuties are used to people and frequent the campground, but beware, they will steal food, so it is recommended to make use of the food storage boxes, especially overnight.

Ready to pack your gear, leave the city behind, and enjoy this remote camping adventure? Have you ever stayed at Scorpion Campground on Santa Cruz Island? Tell us all about your experience in the comments. If you are planning a trip to the island, lugging your gear to the campsite is much easier with this foldable wagon from Backcountry!
