This Iconic Hiking Trail In Southern California Is One Of The Coolest Outdoor Adventures You’ll Ever Take

Most Southern California locals know about and perhaps have visited Catalina Island, but many are not nearly as familiar with the other Channel Islands just a bit farther north. Where I live, these islands are visible right off the coast on most days and are easily accessible by a boat ride from the harbors in Ventura, CA. The islands that make up Channel Islands National Park offer a host of recreational opportunities including hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, camping, and more. If you are looking for an adventure that comes with stunning views and fewer crowds, you have to check out the Smuggler’s Cove trail on Santa Cruz Island.

Santa Cruz is the largest of the Channel Islands and the easiest to get to, lying just 20 miles offshore from Ventura. It is known for its many hiking trails and sea caves, including the massive Painted Cave.

The most popular way to get to Santa Cruz is by catching one of Island Packers’ boat trips, which will land you at Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz in just a little over an hour. From here you can set off on the trail to the beautiful Smuggler’s Cove.

This is a 7.7-mile out-and-back trail and is moderately challenging with almost no shade, so be sure to bring plenty of water and consider trekking poles to keep a steady footing on the long hike.

The terrain of the island and the spectacular views make this one of the prettiest and most unique hikes in SoCal while remaining one of the less crowded.

From the trail, you can view the neighboring Anacapa Island with its interesting plateaus and peak.

There are several trails that branch off and allow you to explore different parts of the island.

The main trail takes you across the eastern tip of Santa Cruze and leads to the picturesque Smuggler’s Cove Beach, where you can rest, enjoy a picnic, swim in the warmer months, and get a little shade before heading back.
