This Beachfront Community In Southern California Is The Best Place To Spend A Long Weekend

Ocean Beach in San Diego offers a unique, old-school Southern California beach experience with various attractions and a charming vacation rental.

It is no secret that the San Diego area has many wonderful beachfront neighborhoods and towns to visit that make idyllic spots for a weekend getaway. Tucked between Mission Bay and Point Loma is a little beach town that feels like a throwback to California’s past, and I mean that in the most delightful way. We discovered a little vacation rental in Ocean Beach, San Diego, that makes a perfect home base for a soulful weekend getaway. Let's find out why this is one of the best beach towns in SoCal.

Ocean Beach is a lively Bohemian community in San Diego that has retained its classic, old-school, Southern California Beach vibe.

Take in the sweeping views or fish from the West Coast’s longest pier (no license required!) at the beach, or stroll down Newport Avenue and discover surf boutiques, antique shops, cafes, and brewpubs.

The soft, sandy beaches in this area are more than just a beautiful place to catch some rays. When the tide goes out on the shore in Ocean Beach, spectacular tide pools are uncovered. Walk along the rocky beach with your head down and eyes peeled to discover colorful little creatures, from pretty urchins to prickly starfish, and plenty more.

Get to know this cool and funky little town in a fun, unique way by hopping in a “GoCar” for a GPS-led self-guided tour starting from Old Town. Stop along the way to grab a coffee or a bite, and of course, to snap some great photos.

Enjoy a quintessential San Diego ocean experience by taking a 3-hour whale-watching tour! Boats leave right from Mission Bay, right near Ocean Beach, and take just about 10 minutes to reach the open sea where the search for marine life begins. In addition to whales (different species depending on the season), voyages often encounter pods of playful dolphins, California sea lions, and more.

You could book a room at any of the many hotels in the San Diego area, but I recommend staying in the little Bohemian bubble of Ocean Beach with this adorable bungalow as your home base. Set back from the street in a family-oriented neighborhood, behind two other cottages, you will enjoy privacy and quiet.

The bungalow is just one block from a cliff-top path where you can walk into town or down to the beach. There are beach cruisers available for guest use as well. You can ride to the beach or explore the sights.

Perfect for couples or solo travelers, this beach-themed studio bungalow provides just what you need - no more, no less - for a great overnight stay. You will sleep like a baby on the Queen Tempurpedic mattress after watching a movie on the 52-inch TV with satellite.

A great little kitchenette makes it easy to bring and enjoy a meal, a glass of wine, coffee, etc. There is a fridge and freezer (can you say ice cream?), microwave, electric skillet, toaster oven, wine glasses, utensils, and more. There is also a gas grill with a side burner outside.

At the end of the day, soak your tired muscles in the large hot tub tucked away in the courtyard.

You will not regret a long weekend in San Diego’s hidden gem, Ocean Beach, CA. Have you explored this fun little community? What are the best beach towns in SoCal that you have enjoyed? If you are ready to plan your escape, start by booking your stay at the OB Bungalow on Vrbo!

Another incredible spot in Southern California is in La Jolla. The iconic sea cave is a popular spot for kayaking, but there is much more to this hidden gem town in SoCal:
