The Incredible Campground In Northern California Where No Reservation Is Required
Take a spur-of-the-moment trip to Mattole Beach in Northern California! Reservations are not required to stay at this secluded campground right next to the beach. Mattole Campground is located in Petrolia, a remote area in Northern California, far from any major towns. The closest town, Ferndale, is over an hour away! That should give you a good idea of just how remote this place is. If you want a remote getaway at the last minute, consider this campground. We think this place just might be the best campground near Ferndale in Northern California.
The seclusion of Mattole Campground is a big part of its appeal.
Located on the north side of the King Range Wilderness, Mattole Campground is right next to the sandy beach.
Frequent visitors to this campground state it can get cold and windy so be sure to wear layers and bring enough blankets to keep warm.
Campers cannot see the beach from every campsite, but no matter which campsite you find it is a short walk to the beach.
The campground has 22 tent or trailer campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, but no hookups.
There is also no potable water or firewood for sale, so you’ll need to bring both.
You can really disconnect from technology here since cell phone service is spotty.
At night your light-source (and entertainment) is the Milky Way Galaxy, which lights-up the sky.
Avid hikers will enjoy easy access to the Mattole Trailhead, which is right next to the campground.
From this trailhead hikers can start the 25.4-mile trail south along the coast all the way to Black Sands Beach. This trail is the best way to explore the Lost Coast.
The road to the campground is called Lighthouse Road.
It is a bit windy and can be rough, so be prepared for that. Your reward is at the end of the road! Just imagine falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves.
Venture out from Mattole Campground to explore Ferndale, a beautifully preserved Victorian town located an hour north.
Or, drive less than two hours south next to the mountains to reach the famous Shelter Cove.
