It’s Impossible To Forget The Year Wisconsin Saw Its Single Largest Snowfall Ever
Wisconsin experienced its largest one-day snowfall on Groundhog Day 2011, with over two feet of snow in some areas.
Cheese isn’t the only thing we’ve got an abundance of here in Wisconsin. Snow is pretty plentiful, too! The question "Does it snow in Wisconsin?" is so silly that it may as well be rhetorical. Every winter, the Badger State experiences a lot of the white stuff... more than its fair share, some might argue. This was especially true for a particular day in 2011; a day many areas of Wisconsin saw the biggest one-day snowfall on record. Let's take a look at Wisconsin's largest snowfall, back in Groundhog Day 2011.
Let's take a trip back in time to 2011. There was a royal wedding. Kim Kardashian was married for 76 days. The Harry Potter series wrapped up. And it was also the year of Wisconsin's largest snowfall ever.
For several areas in Wisconsin, the biggest one-day snowfall came on Groundhog Day 2011. Known appropriately as The Groundhog Day Blizzard, the powerful winter storm wreaked havoc on a large portion of the U.S. and Canada from January 31 to February 2, 2011.
(This epic winter event is also referred to as The Super Bowl Blizzard and Snowmageddon, depending on who you ask.)
Wisconsin, particularly the southeastern portion of the state, was among the worst-hit areas in the country.
The storm came on quickly and with a vengeance. The governor at the time declared a state of emergency in 29 different Wisconsin counties.
During the overnight hours of February 1-2, the blizzard dumped more than two feet of snow on some parts of the state! Imagine waking up to that!
When all was said and done, 26 inches of snow fell in Walworth County, and a total of 24 inches fell in Kenosha and Racine Counties. That's two feet of snow, folks!
Strong winds and blistering cold temperatures accompanied the ample snowfall, only adding to the storm’s fame - and danger.
Following the blizzard (Wisconsin's largest single-storm snowfall), many residents had to literally dig their way out of their homes.
An unbelievable amount of snow wasn’t the only result of this Wisconsin blizzard.
Following the storm, just about all schools, businesses, and government buildings in southeastern Wisconsin remained closed on February 2, making it a Groundhog's Day no one in the Badger State will ever forget.
Additionally, large portions of I-94 and I-43 remained closed for quite some time due to dangerous conditions and stranded vehicles. Truly, the magnitude of this massive blizzard remains unrivaled.
So, do you remember Wisconsin's largest snowfall? Were you living in the southeastern part of the state at the time of this epic blizzard? Did you have to dig your way out? Know of another unforgettable winter storm? If so, tell us in the comments section - we love hearing from you!
Of course, the Badger State is no stranger to big, snowy winters. And the winter of Wisconsin's largest snowfall isn’t the only memorable weather event! Wisconsin was hit by a devastating blizzard in 1976, and it was an incredible event that folks still talk about to this day.
