It won't be long now, folks. The thermometer may still be reading summer some of the time, but fall is right around the corner (leaves in Almost Heaven typically peak in terms of color in late September in the highland areas, and continue through October as you move south or up into the extreme northern or eastern panhandles), and we're here to help you be ready when it comes. There's almost no better place in the world to enjoy the autumn season than West Virginia -- and here's just some of the proof. Make plans to hit at least one (if not all!) of these beautiful spots this fall when the leaves begin to turn!
1. Harpers Ferry
Beautiful, historic, and covered in trees. These are just a few of the reasons to visit Harpers Ferry, West Virginia this October!
2. The Endless Wall in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
There's no wrong spot to visit in the New River Gorge National Park come fall, but the Endless Wall Trail (which has been named one of the best trails in America) is especially worth seeing as the leaves begin to change.
3. Douglas Falls
Craving a waterfall adventure this season? Try Douglas Falls, which is accessible with an easy stroll along an old gravel road. It's a beautiful place anytime of year, it's not far form Blackwater Falls State Park (another good spot to visit!), and it boasts a stunning mix of colors (orange rocks, aqua water) to supplement the fall colors mix.
4. Dolly Sods
What would a fall list be without a nod to the autumn beauty to be found at Dolly Sods each September? It's such a beautiful spot, especially the view from Bear Rocks, that we're giving you two pictures of it to enjoy instead of just one!
5. Hawks Nest State Park
Located in Ansted, West Virginia, Hawks Nest State Park provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and river, as well as a scenic lift so you can enjoy a unique ride through the autumn splendor.
6. Coopers Rock Overlook
Located near Morgantown, West Virginia, Coopers Rock is a must see in any season, but especially when the colors begin to change on the trees.
7. The West Virginia Capitol Building
We know we're biased, but we just love the sight of the West Virginia Capitol! And it's especially scenic with fall foliage reflected in the river that runs alongside it.
Like we said earlier, we can't think of a better place in the world to celebrate the fall season than right here in West Virginia. Where are you heading this year to enjoy the autumn splendor?
