12 Surprising Things You May Not Expect When Moving To Washington

Discover the top hiking trails in the Pacific Northwest, known for their stunning scenic views and diverse landscapes.

Moving to a new state always presents a few challenges and interesting surprises. Moving to Washington state is no different. If you're new to the Evergreen region or planning on moving out here anytime soon, here are 12 surprising things about life in the stunning Evergreen region:

1. What the weather's actually like.

It's not always cold, cloudy and rainy out...but when it is, you may wonder why everyone's still outside with just their hoods up. If you're on the Eastern side of the mountains you'll see nothing but sun and desert, and it's absolutely glorious.

2. Getting up to the store counter with a $5 item, but it rings up around $5.33.

The 6.5% state sales tax is something we all sadly have to deal with at checkout (though the total may be more depending on your area).

3. Most people are pretty laid back.

Washingtonians have been described as some of the most honest & friendly people in the whole country!

4. How much Western & Eastern Washington differ.

In addition to separate climates, there are also various political opinions, even though our state is generally thought to be more liberal. Your mind will be blown after you realize that the two sides are nearly opposites!

5. So. Much. Opportunity.

There are several resources in our state for job-seekers, entrepreneurs, or companies looking to expand. We also have the highest minimum wage in the country at $9.47/hr!

6. You can find jaw-dropping Evergreen trees and mountainous beauty everywhere!

This pic was captured along Artist Ridge Trail, at the end of Mount Baker Scenic Highway.

7. You may start recycling.

You probably won't be totally obsessed about it, but you might find that tossing your beer/wine bottle in a blue bin rather than the garbage may turn into a habit after living here for a few months.

8. Your taste in coffee might become incredibly picky...

Size, choice of roast, cream/no cream, sugar/no sugar, temperature, milk, flavors, amount of espresso/shots... THERE ARE SO MANY OPTIONS.

9. ...and you'll realize you're pretty selective about beer and wine, too.

Between our countless breweries & wineries around here, your tastes will become accustomed to the good stuff.

10. Everyone really loves their dogs...

How could you not? They're just so adorable.

11. ...and our Seahawks!

You'll be completely blown away after you realize how much our residents are devoted as 12s!

12. By the end of the day, you'll be a happy camper.

No, literally...you'll be sitting out by a tent roasting s'mores one day and you'll never be happier about living in this great state!
