11 Strong Beliefs Texas Natives Stand By
Texans have strong opinions about their unique state culture, food, and traditions.
There are certain things Texans will argue over until our last dying breath. We're an opinionated bunch, after all, and we aren't willing to sacrifice any of the things that make our state and its people so wonderful – like chili without beans. See how many of these Texas quirks you can relate to:
1. Buc-ee’s Reigns Supreme as the King of Texas Gas Stations
There is no doubt that Buc-ee's is the king of gas stations. Let's not argue about these! And when Mississippi tried to one-up us by building the largest Buc-ee's in the country, we responded by creating an even bigger one.
2. H-E-B Is Hands Down the Best Grocery Store in Texas
Can we all agree that H-E-B is the superior grocery store? We look like fish out of water when we visit other states and try to go grocery shopping. H-E-B for president. Would you happen to know why H-E-B is a Texas institution? Well, in addition to their friendly staff, they offer unbeatable local products.
3. In Texas, Distance Is Measured in Hours, Not Miles
When your state is over 800 miles across, all that really matters is how long it's going to take you to get to your destination. And that’s the reason why every Texas road trip is measured in hours, not miles. Be sure to keep that in mind when visiting the Lone Star State.
4. "Everything Is Bigger in Texas" – And It Really Is True
"Everything is bigger in Texas" isn't just a catchphrase – it's the truth. Have you seen Big Tex? The San Jacinto Monument? How about the fact that our Capitol building is bigger than the U.S. Capitol? These are some facts about Texas we proudly stand by.
5. Texas Food Is the Best – No Debate About It
Texas food is the best food. Think of chicken-fried steak, Tex-Mex, BBQ – the real stuff – tender, smoky, and proudly Texan. We definitely eat well here in the Lone Star State. And please let us not argue about this because it's the truth – no food tastes better than Texan delicacies.
6. In Texas, Football Isn’t Just a Sport – It’s a Way of Life
In Texas, Football isn't just a sport – it's a way of life. Those Friday night lights have a certain magic about them that's impossible to put into words. That's what brings communities together, and rivalries are born.
7. High School Homecoming in Texas Isn’t Complete Without Moms
Speaking of football, high school homecoming games wouldn't be the same without moms. They may look quirky to outsiders, but to us, they're a time-honored tradition that we'll defend to the death.
8. In Texas, Breakfast Tacos Are Perfect Any Time of Day
When in the Jumbo State, know that it's acceptable to eat breakfast tacos at any time of day. Everyone loves tacos here. This delicacy is preferably served alongside a bucket or several warm, perfectly salted tortilla chips and queso. One of the best places to grab breakfast tacos is at Titas Taco House.
9. Texans Would Rather Face Hurricanes Than Move Up North
For those of us who live on the coast, we'd gladly choose to deal with hurricanes rather than move up north. We're accustomed to losing power and battling with our insurance companies over home repairs. Getting snowed in and having to wake up hours before work to defrost our windshields, however? That's just something we Texans aren't built for.
10. Texas Natives Have More State Pride Than Anywhere Else in the U.S.
We have more state pride than anywhere else in the U.S., and that's a fact that we proudly claim. Can you mention any other states that have waffle makers shaped like their state flags? That's right – zero that we know of, at least.
11. In Texas, Real Chili Means No Beans Allowed
Beans absolutely do not belong in chili. Anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they're talking about. This is one of those arguments in Texas that is indisputable. Check out this read about the 12 bucket-list-worthy restaurants to try in Texas.
