Texas firsts are plentiful! Some of the most important, everyday things started in Texas – microchips and ATMs, to name a few. And we can’t forget about some of our favorite foods in the world that wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for our state – from chili, Fritos, and breakfast tacos, these Texas inventions showcase the creativity and resilience that define the Friendship State. With so many wonderful inventions from Texas, we have a lot to thank the Lone Star State for. Here are 11 things that Texas did first.
1. Where It All Began – Texas and the World’s First Domed Arena
We'll start off with one of the most well-known of all Texas Firsts. The state built the first domed multi-purpose sports arena. Also known as the Houston Astrodome, this architectural marvel opened in 1965 and forever changed how the world viewed sporting venues.
2. A Dallas Man Gave the World the Frozen Margarita

This has got to be one of the most incredible inventions from Texas (pun intended). In 1971, a Dallas restaurateur by the name Mariano Martinez created the first frozen margarita machine. There is no doubt that this great invention forever revolutionized how Americans enjoy the classic cocktail.
3. The Super Bowl’s Name? You Can Thank Texas for That
We came up with the name "Super Bowl" for the most important football game of the year. It is worth noting that this term was coined by a Texan by the name Lamar Hunt, the founder of the Kansas City Chiefs. This invention was inspired by his children’s ‘Super Ball’ toy.
4. The First Modern ATM? Yep, It Started in Texas
The first ATM was invented in New York, but it could only be used to withdraw cash. Thanks to a Dallas man, we can use them to deposit money, obtain our account balance, and more. In 1969, Don Wetzel, a Dallas engineer, developed the modern ATM, introducing multi-functional banking to the world.
5. The World’s First 7-Eleven Started Right Here in Texas
The next time you're sippin' on the best slurp known to man, you can thank Texas. The truth is that it all began in Dallas in 1927 as Tote’m Stores before being renamed 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect its extended operating hours.
6. Whole Foods Got Its Start Right Here in Texas
Are you surprised about this Texas first? Well, in 1980, Whole Foods Market opened its first store in Austin. Within no time, Whole Foods gained popularity across the U.S. due to its focus on organic produce and sustainable living.
7. Thank a Texan for the Invention of the Microchip
If you like your phone, computer, iPad, or pretty much any other electronic device you have...you can thank Texas. In 1958, an engineer at Texas Instruments, Jack Kilby, invented the first microchip. That's how modern computing came to life.
8. Dr Pepper Was Born Right Here in Texas
Well, who doesn't like Dr Pepper? But did you know it was invented in the Yellow Rose State, too? Here is the thing – in 1885, Charles Alderton (a pharmacist) created Dr Pepper in Waco. That makes it the oldest major soft drink brand in the United States.
9. Texas Gave the World Another Crunchy Favorite – Fritos
For Frito lovers, we should all be grateful to Charles Elmer Doolin of San Antonio for inventing this delicacy in 1932. Through his invention, Fritos became the foundation for the popular Frito Pie. What a crunchy icon – Fritos!
10. Breakfast Tacos Started Here – And Texans Do Them Best
When it comes to things Texas did first, this has got to be one of the best! Did you know that tacos are a staple in San Antonio and Austin? The residents made these simple eggs and tortillas into a cherished cultural symbol. Breakfast tacos are a must-have when in Texas.
11. Chili Was Perfected Right Here in the Lone Star State
Oh yeah, and chili. We can basically thank Texas for all the world's greatest foods. Back in the 1800s, Texas-style chili con carne was created in San Antonio.
