Here Are 10 Crazy Traditions You’ll Totally Get If You’re From Austin
Austinites do things differently than the rest of the world. Their parties are bigger, their competitions more fierce, and their food more decadent. Austin traditions may seem strange to some, but locals know this is the best way to live. These are 10 crazy traditions you'll totally get if you're from Austin.
1. Celebrating Eeyore's birthday every Spring.
Since 1962, Austinites have celebrated the sad little donkey from A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh series. This event now takes place at Pease Park every April, and it's always a colorful party full of acrobatics, costumes, and drum circles.
2. Drinking at Scholz Garten after a Longhorn game.
The oldest restaurant in Texas knows a thing or two about throwing a shindig. Located at 1607 San Jacinto Blvd, Scholz Garten has been a popular post-game hangout spot for decades.
3. Strolling through Zilker Park's twinkling Trail of Lights every December.
Brr! Even when it's 40 degrees, Austinites will bundle up from head to toe. With hot chocolate in hand, we'll bask in the beauty of Zilker Park's magical holiday light show and count our lucky stars that the temperature hardly ever dips below freezing.
4. Compete in the O.Henry Pun-Off.
This quirky competition has been making people chuckle and groan for more than 40 years. Test your wordplay skills at the ultimate pun competition held at the O.Henry Museum every Spring.
5. Covering the UT bell tower with orange light after a Longhorn victory.
Nothing feels more satisfying than driving by an orange, luminous bell tower.
6. Playing a friendly game of chicken poop bingo at a bar on a Sunday afternoon.
Place your bet on a number, and if the chicken poops on it you could walk away with a wad of cash! Though a silly competition, one thing is certain: winning a lump sum of money makes you feel a whole lot better about going back to work on Monday.
7. Enormous high school homecoming mums.
Oh, your homecoming mum doesn't knock you to the floor? It's clearly not big enough, then.
8. Taking roadside photos in the freshly blooming bluebonnets.
Wildflower season is undoubtedly the most gorgeous time of year for Central Texas. When you come across an untouched plot of vibrant bluebonnets, it's time to pull into the emergency lane and snap a few pictures.
9. Eating tamales at Christmas and brisket at Thanksgiving.
And we eat a lot of it.
10. Stopping at Whataburger after a long night of bar hopping.
Somehow, these burgers taste even better at 3 a.m.
