Here Are The 10 Biggest Risks Living In South Dakota
South Dakota has unique risks such as winter driving and wildlife encounters, but it remains a beloved place to live.
Without a doubt, South Dakota is a spectacular place to put down roots, but there are a few risks that you should be aware of before becoming a resident. Like any place, it comes with its own set of hazards that we all have to face from time to time. Below are just 10 of the biggest risks of living in South Dakota. See if they're worth it to you.
1. Winter driving can certainly be a bit treacherous.
It’s important to always give yourself extra time, and never, ever, drive with bald tires. If you're asking yourself, what are the dangers of living in South Dakota, definitely put winter driving at the top of the list.
2. Wildlife targeting your vehicle, especially in Custer State Park.
Okay, sometimes it’s humorous and not much of a risk. The opportunity to get up close with wildlife is one of the many pros of living in South Dakota.
3. Traffic jams on I-90 due to construction.
Or traffic jams on the way to the Sturgis Rally. Am I right?
4. Getting lost in the woods.
Or worse yet, getting lost in the ginormous Black Hills National Forest. Stay on the trails!
5. Driving on gravel.
Obviously, with South Dakota’s huge countryside, this can’t be avoided for a lot of people, but there’s nothing worse than gravel spewing all over your spanking clean car, especially when it’s wet.
6. Not being able to laugh off the inaccurate stereotypes.
People have so many crazy misconceptions about our lovely state, and it will drive you crazy if you can’t ever have a sense of humor about it.
7. Going out in the freezing weather without properly bundling up.
In the dead of winter, it can get REALLY cold, so you always want to make sure you’re properly bundled! If you're not a fan of frigid temps, that's one of the reasons not to move to South Dakota.
8. Not wearing sunscreen in the summer.
While our winters can get intense, so can our summers. If you skip the sunscreen, you will suffer.
9. Getting caught in a storm.
While storm chasing is a popular activity, make sure you know when it's time to head home.
10. Spending too much money on chain restaurants.
Our state has so many local eateries that it’s a crime to waste your money on fast food and not take advantage of delicious, home cooked meals.
Despite the risks, I’m proud to call South Dakota my home; I couldn’t picture myself anywhere else. What do you think are the biggest risks of living in South Dakota? What are the risks that you encounter during your day-to-day life in our state? Let us know in the comments!
