Weird laws: every state has them. There are plenty of laws that are just plain strange, and Ohio has no shortage. From city laws to state-wide laws that you may not even know about, there are some weird laws in Ohio. Unless you've ever asked "is it illegal to hunt for whales in Ohio?", these are probably not things you've ever thought about. Here are a few of our favorite weird laws in Ohio that will leave you both scratching your head in wonder and laughing aloud. Ready for a deep dive into the weird and wonderful law book of the Buckeye State? Let's go!
1. It's illegal to fish for whales in Ohio on a Sunday.
Are there whales in Ohio? No, not unless you plan on going fishing at an aquarium.
2. In Canton, if one loses their pet tiger, they must notify the authorities within one hour.
This is comforting to know; however, what exactly happened in Canton to make this a law? We would love to know!
3. It is illegal to get a fish drunk in Ohio.
(Because that's something everyone has tried?)
4. The Ohio driver’s education manual states that you must honk the horn whenever you pass another car.
In case you've ever wondered why people were honking at you while you drove down the road, maybe they just paid extra-close attention to the driving manual!
5. It is illegal for more than five women to live in a house.
This law was most likely aimed at preventing the establishment of brothels, so it makes more sense than it might sound like at first.
6. In Akron, posting signs at swimming pools is illegal.
Keep those signs to yourself!
7. In Bay Village, Ohio, it is illegal to walk a cow down Lake Road.
But, you know, all other roads are okay.
