5 Reasons Why Ohio Is the Best Place To Raise a Family

Ohio blends outdoor adventure, theme parks, art, and food into family-friendly living. Discover why families love calling Ohio home.

When I moved to Michigan from Florida a few years ago, many of my friends made similar Sunshine State exits. The comedian went to LA, the costume designer to NYC. The coolest mom I’ve ever met, though? She packed up her family and moved to Ohio. At first, I gave her decision a bit of side eye. I mean, what’s in Ohio, right? Cornfields? A state fair pumpkin chucking contest? After learning more about the Buckeye State, though, I fully understood her decision to raise her little family in Ohio. There’s an ease here... not obvious at first glance, but unmistakable once you live it.

1. Affordability and Cost of Living

Every time someone talks about raising a family, money enters the room like an uninvited relative. Thankfully, Ohio doesn’t make that relative linger. The Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) ranks Ohio the nation’s 20th most affordable state, balancing housing, groceries, utilities, and healthcare in a way that lets families plan past the next bill.

Housing leans into that affordability in a big way. The median home sales price in Ohio sits around $260,000, well below the national average, giving buyers buying power without mortgage-induced panic. In northeast Ohio, both Cleveland and Akron saw significant increases in new housing permits in 2022, signaling builders are responding to growing demand. That means neighborhoods that used to feel sleepy now hum with new families putting down roots, creating community rather than congestion.

2. Weather, Climate, and Natural Beauty

I never expected Ohio to make me stop mid‑walk and stare at a tree, but here we are. Spring unfurls with stubborn optimism as green returns inch by inch. Summer fills the air with cicadas and lake breezes. Fall stages a slow, deliberate performance as trees turn copper and gold. Winter adds snowfall that makes sleds necessary and snowmen possible.

Hocking Hills State Park rewards even hesitant hikers with cliffs, waterfalls, and forest paths that feel older than most small towns. Cuyahoga Valley National Park threads river, meadow, and woods between cities, creating an easy escape just minutes from pavement. Up near Lake Erie, Maumee Bay State Park offers marshlands and gentle beaches that coax evenings into long, relaxed stretches. That variety turns every weekend into its own kind of adventure.

3. Food and Local Flavor

Ohio’s food culture has range. If someone tells you they’re from Cincinnati, get ready for a passionate defense of chili served over spaghetti with cheese on top... and don’t even think about questioning it. Tacos thrive everywhere from food trucks to neighborhood kitchens. Donut shops open early and lock up late, which speaks volumes about local priorities.

Then there’s the Mount Olympus gyro challenge at Greek Village Grille in Lakewood. This isn’t a clever name slapped on a fancy appetizer, y'all, this is an eight‑pound sandwich challenge built from a 15‑inch pita stuffed with lamb, beef, chicken, pork, tzatziki, onions, tomatoes, and fries, all requiring completion in under an hour. Finish it, and you earn bragging rights and a story that will outlive most bragging rights you’ve ever heard. Hundreds have tried, very few have beaten it. That’s the kind of food challenge Ohio does well.

4. Art and Creative Culture

Some places have art galleries tucked away downtown. Ohio treats art like part of daily life. The Ohio art corridor threads murals, studios, and galleries across cities and small towns alike, turning ordinary brick walls into vibrant narratives. Cleveland’s mural scene rivals those of cities twice its size, transforming streets into open‑air exhibits. Sandusky hosts one of the largest collections of cartoon art in the country, offering families a bright, playful space that delights kids without ever talking down to adults.

Art in Ohio crept up on me like good jazz: you don’t notice it at first, but once it’s there, you wonder how life looked before it arrived.

5. Amusement Parks and Family Adventure

When someone says “best state for roller coasters,” Ohio comes up in every conversation among coaster enthusiasts. I say this with the authority of someone who spent summers touring coasters across the country. Cedar Point and Kings Island don’t just host rides; they host memories. My personal favorite remains The Beast at Kings Island, a wooden legend that barrels through woods in a way that makes ordinary summer afternoons feel cinematic.

These parks give families something collective to look forward to, something bigger than screens and snacks and weekend chores. Lines turn into conversations. Nervous laughter becomes shared accomplishment.

Ohio offers families a blend of affordability, natural beauty, culture, and fun that makes everyday life feel rich without needing spectacle. Visit Ohio, walk its trails, eat its food, explore its art, ride its coasters, and look around more than once. That friend who moved her family here wasn’t running from something. She was running toward a place worth staying. Find more reasons to make Ohio your home using our new Travel Planner!
