Nebraska’s Winter Forecast Is in (And It’s Not What You’d Expect)

Nebraska’s winter forecast for 2025–2026 is full of surprises. Snow, cold snaps, and wet weather could shake up the Cornhusker state!

Thank goodness Cornhuskers have a good sense of humor about the weather, because it’s a roller coaster from year to year and season to season—we never really know what we’re going to get. But ah… such is life on the Great Plains. Nevertheless, the experts at the Farmers’ Almanac have issued their 2025–2026 winter weather predictions for Nebraska, and this born-and-raised Nebraskan will tell you how to handle it.

The Almanac’s theme for the upcoming season is “Chill, Snow, Repeat,” hinting at a winter filled with cold snaps, moisture, and plenty of surprises across the state.

Nebraska is officially part of the North Central U.S., though central and southern parts of the state can also be influenced by the Southern Plains forecast zone. What does that mean for us? Northern Nebraska is likely to see a classic winter wonderland with heavier snow, while central and southern parts may get a wetter winter with relatively less snowfall, cold rain events, and occasional freezing precipitation.

The cold will be serious when it hits. The forecast calls for two significant cold spells this season—one arriving in mid-January and another in mid-February—both expected to bring bitter temperatures and a heightened chance of wintry precipitation.

But then again, we never really know what to expect, do we? So just be sure to prepare for whatever winter throws our way. Luckily, Nebraskans know the drill: stock up on essentials when needed, bundle up in layers, and get ready for some sidewalk and driveway shoveling if the snow hits.

Though there will be times when the weather outside is inhospitable, these conditions bring out the best in Cornhuskers. It’s a season when communities pull together to help neighbors, check on friends, and show the grit and warmth we’re known for. And when the storms finally pass, they leave behind some of the most peaceful winter landscapes you’ll ever see.

For the 2025–2026 winter, northern Nebraska is expected to see heavier snowfall, while central and southern regions may have a wetter, chilly season with occasional freezing precipitation and periodic cold snaps. Be sure to have all the cold-weather gear you’ll need, wear your layers, and plan to enjoy local winter activities in your neck of the woods—because no matter what the Almanac says, Nebraskans always find a way to make the best of it.
