This Hike in Nebraska Is 100% Worth Braving the Cold

Before you can protest a winter trip through Nebraska, though, consider that this community is home to one of the most dazzling hikes in the state. Believe it or not, a view that's stunning all year-round becomes even more otherworldly in the winter. Start gathering your cold weather accoutrements now, because this winter hike in Nebraska will take you to an overlook you need to see to believe.

Chadron, Nebraska, is a community of some 5,000 residents. In the early days of its settlement, it was a stop on the route from Omaha to Wyoming and vice versa - sort of. The town, originally called O'Linn, was expected to be along the path of the Fremont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad, but it ended up being built six miles away. The residents of O'Linn naturally packed up the whole community and moved it to its current location, at which point they renamed it to Chadron for a French fur trapper who once occupied the area. This history is still recognized in the area, particularly in the Museum of the Fur Trade.

It isn't hard to imagine how the local landscape must have awed early fur traders. Nowadays, the community is also known for Chadron State Park, the first to be founded in Nebraska. With 10 miles of park trails spanning 974 acres, locals have no shortage of land to explore. Here, hikers adore exploring bluffs and canyons dotted with ponderosa pine.

As stunning as the park is in the warmer months, it's even more dazzling once snow arrives. The Blackhills Overlook Trail is the perfect way to take in the beauty of this landscape, and it's a mere 3.3 miles in length. Yes, that's out and back! Though the trail takes about an hour and a half to complete, the 501 feet of elevation gain you'll encounter make it a bit challenging.

Once you make it to the top of the loop trail, you'll take in a landscape that's almost reminiscent of Hoth from "Star Wars." Snow-covered rock formation jut out of a blanket of white, adding a stillness to the landscape that's downright awe-inspiring.

With an archery range, fishing spots, scenic cabins, and plenty of pretty picnicking spots, visiting Chadron State Park is always an adventure. However, it's an almost meditative escape in the winter. The hiking trails are much less populated, and the absence of migratory species adds a certain stillness to the landscape.

This is especially true on the Blackhills Overlook Trail, which is somewhat quiet even on a warm, sunny day. The steep elevation, rocky terrain, and challenging stretches of trail make it necessary to bring a buddy for your hike. One wrong step can make for a very cold and uncomfortable walk back to the car, so make sure you're well prepared. And it shouldn't be hard to snag a hiking partner for this adventure!
