We're no stranger to fantastic museums here in Montana. We love to preserve our state's history, from recent discoveries to our prehistoric past. We even have a museum with one of the world's largest collections of dinosaur bones.
Gallatin County alone has a pretty fascinating history, and you can learn all about it at the Gallatin History Museum.
The Gallatin History Museum is operated by the Gallatin Historical Society, an organization founded in 1977 to preserve and promote the history of the county.
The museum sits at 317 West Main Street in Bozeman, so it's easy to find.
The goal here is simple: to preserve, promote, and foster the history of Gallatin County and Southwest Montana.
If you've ever been curious about Southwest Montana's past, this is the place to be.
Permanent exhibits include the infamous Big Horn Gun, a life-size Pioneer cabin, exhibits on women, agriculture, music, and the history of the jail.
In other words, you'll learn a little bit of everything.
The history of the jails of Gallatin County is quite fascinating -- in fact, the museum has the gallows platform that was used for the third and final legal hanging in Gallatin County in 1924.
You'll also see plenty of exhibits that aren't so sinister, including accurate portrayals of everyday life nearly a century ago.
The museum also has a photo archive with more than 20,000 historic images that can be reproduced for a small fee.
The research library is a wealth of information, maintaining an extensive file collection with information about local families, places, and other topics.
In addition to its classic exhibits, the museum hosts temporary special exhibits as well.
The Gallatin County Tapestry Project is the current collaboration.
The County History Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, although hours vary by season.
Admission is $7.50, although student and senior discounts are available and children under 12 are always free.
