10 Words You’ll Only Understand If You’re From Missouri

Missouri has unique slang terms that vary by region, including words like "Hoosier" and "Farty-Far."

Every state has its own slang and Missouri is no exception. We even have regional slang that varies from Kansas City to St. Louis down to the Ozarks. Have you heard any of these?

1. Hoosier

Otherwise commonly known as a redneck.

2. Farty-Far

This is the interstate referred to by non-Missourians as forty-four.

3. Warsh (The 'R' Is Very Hard)

This is the way we warsh our clothes, warsh our clothes, warsh our clothes. This is the way we warsh our clothes so early in the morning.

4. Farty

Interstate 64 was highway FORTY until 1988. If you are from Missouri it will forever be highway farty.

5. Put Out

If you are put out and from Missouri, you are likely to be ticked off, angry or mad.

6. Soda

Not Pepsi, pop or Coke. In Missouri, anything carbonated is soda.

7. Sundah

This is how folks from Missouri order ice cream in a dish with hot fudge.

8. Sack

Not a bag, Missourians carry their groceries home in a paper sack.

9. Crick

Often heard in the optimistic phrase, "If the Lord is willin' and the crick don't rise." Visitors won't always find creeks but there are plenty of cricks, especially in the Ozarks.

10. Quart-ar

This 25 cent denomination of American currency is pronounced with an "a", not an "e", at the end.
