Minnesota officially became a state in 1858, but its history extends much further back than that. Before the first European settlers arrived, the region already had a rich history. Many Native American people lived in the land that we now call Minnesota and, over the centuries, left their indelible mark for future people to discover. You can still visit some of the relics of Minnesota's native peoples at several places across the state today. One of the most fascinating historic areas in Minnesota is a Native American burial site in St. Paul. Take a look:
Indian Mounds Regional Park is located in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. The address is 10 Mounds Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55106.
The park is on top of a bluff, making it a beautiful place to get out and enjoy nature. Its trails are lovely to walk no matter the time of year.
The park also offers incredible views of downtown St. Paul in the distance.
But first and foremost, Indian Mounds Regional Park is a historic site. It preserves burial mounds left by Native Americans many centuries ago.
In fact, the mounds are estimated to be 1,500 to 2,000 years old.
During the 1800s, researchers excavated the mounds and found log tombs containing many artifacts in addition to human remains.
One of the most fascinating findings was a red clay "death mask" on one of the skulls. Nothing like it has ever been found on any other burial mounds in the region or beyond.
Given its history, the site is now sacred to the Dakota people. The mounds stand as a reminder of those who lived in Minnesota long ago.
