If you've ever felt the need to exist in three states at the same time, this Minnesota historical marker (and Iowa and South Dakota) can satisfy your desire.
The Minnesota-Iowa-South Dakota marker stands, as you've probably guessed, at the precise spot where the corners of the three states meet.
So, standing at that point, you can be in three states at once.
If you're concerned that the marker is obstructing your tristate objective, you can always just give it a hug.
The marker was first erected in 1859 by the Federal Land Office, and it has had a somewhat-difficult history.
It was destroyed by vandals in the early 1900s, and then reset in 1938, under the direction of the U.S. Interior Department. Forty years later, it was hit by a car, and replaced again in 1980. So far, so good ever since.
After your visit to the tristate marker, head on over to Hills, Minnesota, which is just a couple minutes away, and stop in at the Hidden Hills Cafe for a bite to eat.
Its huge burgers are locally famous, and you can wash one down with a cold beer, if you like.
While you're in southwestern Minnesota, don't pass up the chance to visit Blue Mounds State Park, just north of Luverne, Minnesota, and only about half an hour from the marker.
The park is named for an upwelling of rock that, across the prairie and from a distance, appeared like a series of blue mounds to observers.
It's actually a ridge of pinkish Sioux quartzite, which is unique to the region.
The park's Ridgeline Trail is an awesome way to explore the upwelling and its geology.
Blue Mounds is also home to one unit of the state's bison herd - and if you time your visit right, you may be treated to a front row seat.
There's also a spot in a channel of the Mississippi River where you can float in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin at the same time, but you'll need a boat to get there.
Have you visited the Minnesota-Iowa-South Dakota marker? What other roadside attractions or quirks have you encountered?
